Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs ShutAt 2:00 AM, the River North luxury high-rise was silent, save for the hum of centralized air conditioning and the distant sirens echoing from Michigan Avenue.

A four-man tactical team led by Commander Thomas Vance breached the fourteenth-floor penthouse apartment with practiced, silent efficiency. They didn't break down the door; they used a digital frequency cloner to bypass the smart lock in less than four seconds.
I walked into the penthouse right behind Thomas, my heels clicking softly against the hardwood floor.
The apartment was a chaotic mess of discarded designer clothes, empty wine bottles, and glowing laptop screens. On the living room sofa, Chloe Marr was fast asleep wrapped in a silk bathrobe, while Julian sat hunched over a dining table illuminated by the harsh blue light of an open laptop, frantically typing code into an offshore banking portal.
He looked up as the shadows moved across the room.
When Julian saw me standing there in the center of his hiding place, flanked by two private security operatives and corporate counsel, his face turned the color of curdled milk.
“Evelyn...?” he choked out, dropping his laptop mouse with a clatter. He scrambled backward in his chair, staring at me as if I were a ghost risen from the grave. “How... how did you find us? This address was completely unlisted!”
Chloe woke up with a start at the sound of his voice, scrambling off the couch and shrieking as she clutched her robe around her neck. “What is the meaning of this?! Who let you into my apartment? I’m calling the police!”
“Don't bother, Ms. Marr,” Vance said coldly, stepping forward and snapping a pair of heavy digital zip-ties around Julian’s wrists before he could hit the enter key on his laptop. “The police are already waiting in the lobby. Along with federal agents from the financial crimes division.”
Julian thrashed against the restraint, his face twisting in blind panic. “Evelyn, you can't do this! We’re husband and wife! You’re destroying me over a miscarriage—!”
The moment those words left his mouth, something inside me snapped with the finality of a breaking guillotine.
I walked across the room in three long, deliberate strides until I stood directly over him. Before Julian could flinch, my hand flashed out and cracked sharply across his cheek, the sound echoing loudly through the penthouse.
Julian stared at me in stunned silence, his cheek burning red.
“Never—ever—speak of our son as an inconvenience again, Julian,” I whispered, my voice vibrating with suppressed fury so intense it made even the hardened security guards look away. “You abandoned a dying child and a bleeding wife for six days of hedonism. You stole from my father’s company. You threatened my family. And now, you pay the ultimate price.”
Chloe rushed forward, screaming hysterically, “You bitch! You ruined everything! Julian is a genius, you’re just a bitter, barren—!”
Thomas Vance stepped in front of her with effortless military authority, gripping her arm and pushing her back onto the sofa with a chilling warning. “Another word, Ms. Marr, and you’ll be sharing a cell block with him tonight for conspiracy to commit grand larceny.”

Federal agents entered the penthouse seconds later, flashing badges and placing both Julian and Chloe under formal arrest. As the cold steel handcuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists, he looked at me with eyes full of pathetic, groveling terror—hoping for mercy where none existed.
I turned my back on him without uttering another word, walking out of the penthouse and stepping back into the cool Chicago night air.
