Chapter 3 - The Gathering StormThe corporate offices of Vale Meridian grew eerily quiet after Julian’s ejection. For the rest of the morning, I sat at my father’s old mahogany desk, signing restructuring documents, appointing trusted loyalists to key executive positions, and establishing a rigorous audit protocol to purge every trace of Julian’s corrupt management style.

Yet, victory in the boardroom could not erase the phantom pain in my chest.
At 1:00 PM, Maya gently tapped on the open door, stepping inside with a fresh cup of herbal tea and a tablet computer displaying local news feeds.
“Evelyn, you need to see this,” Maya said softly, placing the tablet on the corner of the desk.
I glanced down at the screen. A local celebrity gossip blog—one that Chloe Marr had secretly fed stories to for months—had just published a blistering, highly sensationalized article titled: Corporate Royalty Scandal: CEO Julian Vale and Communications Director Chloe Marr Ousted in Shocking Boardroom Coup!
Worse still, the article contained paparazzi photos taken earlier that morning outside our residential estate: Julian, standing bewildered on the sidewalk beside three black trash bags, surrounded by flashing camera shutters while reporters shouted questions about embezzlement and his sudden firing.
And right beside him stood Chloe Marr, wrapped in designer sunglasses, looking furious as she dodged microphones and blamed me—painting herself as an innocent victim of a vengeful, unstable wife.
“They’re trying to control the narrative,” Maya noted bitterly. “Chloe’s PR friends are pushing out statements claiming that Julian was forced out by a hostile, emotional spouse who staged a coup while suffering from postpartum depression.”
I took a slow sip of the tea, a cold, calculating smile touching the corners of my lips.
“Let them chirp, Maya,” I replied calmly. “A wounded animal makes the loudest noise right before it bleeds out. Chloe thinks she can salvage her reputation by playing the victim, but she doesn't realize that corporate embezzlement and misuse of investor funds are federal matters. A PR spin won't save her from an indictment.”
“What about Julian?” Maya asked hesitantly. “Where did he go?”
“According to our perimeter security logs and credit card alerts, he checked into a mid-tier extended-stay hotel near O'Hare Airport,” I answered, sliding my finger across the tablet to check real-time financial tracking feeds. “His personal accounts are currently frozen pending the forensic audit of his hidden offshore shell companies. Within forty-eight hours, he won't even be able to pay for his hotel room.”
Maya shuddered slightly. “You’re systematically dismantling his entire life, piece by piece.”
“I’m not dismantling anything, Maya,” I said, looking out the window at the sprawling Chicago skyline. “I’m simply restoring the natural order. Julian built his entire existence on borrowed power, borrowed money, and stolen loyalty. I merely turned off the oxygen.”
Later that afternoon, my mother arrived at the office.
She walked in quietly, her elegant black coat draped over her arm, carrying a small silver framed photograph wrapped in tissue paper. She placed it gently on my desk.
It was a picture of my father, smiling proudly on the day Vale Meridian went public, holding me as a toddler in his arms.
“You did what your father would have done, Evelyn,” my mother said softly, resting her hand over mine. Her eyes were moist with unshed tears, carrying the shared grief of our lost grandson. “Arthur always knew Julian was an ambitious opportunist. He warned me on your wedding day. But I am so fiercely proud of how you reclaimed your throne from the ashes.”
“I didn't have a choice, Mom,” I whispered, staring at my father’s face. “When Daniel died... something inside me broke. But out of those pieces, a much stronger version of me was forged. I will never allow anyone to make me feel helpless again.”
As evening descended over Chicago, casting long purple shadows across the canyons of skyscrapers, my phone buzzed violently on the desk.
It wasn't a call. It was an encrypted text message from an unknown number.
I opened it.
Attached was a blurry photo taken from inside a parked car across the street from my estate, showing my mother’s car pulling out of the gates.
Beneath the photo was a single, chilling message:
You think you’ve won, Evelyn? You took everything from us. Watch your back. This war has only just begun.
I stared at the screen, recognizing the petty, vindictive signature style of Chloe Marr’s digital harassment campaigns.
Instead of feeling fear, a dark, thrilling adrenaline surged through my veins.
