Chapter 4 - The Counter-AttackThe threatening text message sat on my phone screen like a coiled viper.

Instead of panicking, I forwarded the screenshot directly to Vance and my private security director, Commander Thomas Vance (no relation to our legal counsel, but an absolute legend in corporate intelligence operations). Within ten minutes, my private office was transformed into a tactical command center.
Commander Vance—a heavily built man with military precision in every movement—slid a secondary tablet across my desk, displaying a live geo-location trace.
“We ran a digital packet analysis on the incoming message, Mrs. Vale,” Thomas reported, his voice crisp and professional. “The text didn't originate from a burner phone. It was sent via an internet-based relay server linked to an IP address registered to a temporary rental apartment in River North.”
“Who rented the apartment?” I asked, leaning forward.
“Chloe Marr,” Thomas replied, tapping the screen to bring up a lease agreement and security camera stills. “She checked into a luxury high-rise under her sister’s maiden name late last night. And she hasn't been alone. Our surveillance team monitoring Julian’s extended-stay hotel confirmed that Julian snuck out through the service exit at midnight and rendezvoused with her at that exact River North address.”
A cold, razor-sharp realization washed over me.
Julian and Chloe hadn't broken up in disgrace; they were circling the wagons, pooling their remaining illicit cash reserves, and preparing a desperate, retaliatory strike against Vale Meridian.
“They think they can intimidate me into dropping the embezzlement charges and restoring Julian’s executive compensation package,” I murmured, studying the building layout on the tablet.
“More than that, Mrs. Vale,” Vance intervened, adjusting his glasses. “Our forensic accountants just flagged an unauthorized wire transfer attempt originating from one of Julian’s dormant subsidiary accounts in the Cayman Islands. He tried to siphon two million dollars out of the corporate pension fund yesterday evening to fund an offshore legal defense—and potentially finance a permanent flight out of the country.”
My eyes narrowed into lethal slits.
“Attempted embezzlement of pension funds,” I said slowly. “That elevates his crimes from a civil white-collar matter straight to federal grand larceny. Thomas, I want a complete freeze placed on all domestic and international accounts associated with both Julian Vale and Chloe Marr immediately.”

“Already in motion, ma'am,” Thomas nodded. “Furthermore, federal marshals have been briefed on his flight risk status. If he attempts to cross state lines or board a private charter, he will be intercepted before he reaches the tarmac.”
“Good,” I said, standing up and smoothing my blazer. “Let’s not wait for them to make another move. Let’s bring the fight directly to their doorstep.”
