Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at the PenthouseBy evening, the news had already leaked to the financial press. Vale Meridian CEO Ousted in Emergency Boardroom Coup; Marital Dissolution Triggers Corporate Shakeup.

By the time Julian arrived at our Greenwich penthouse, his electronic key card flashed red at the door panel.
Access Denied.
He slammed his fist against the wood, shouting curses into the empty hallway, before realizing his passcode had been purged from the master security system. He was forced to buzz the front desk, where the building manager handed him a sealed cardboard box containing his personal clothes, his watch collection, and his passport.
He was locked out of his home, stripped of his title, and facing federal scrutiny over corporate expense fraud through Chloe’s department.
Desperate and unhinged, Julian drove straight to Chloe’s upscale apartment in downtown Manhattan, parking his luxury sedan illegally in the red zone outside her building. He pounded on her door for five minutes straight until the lock finally clicked and Chloe yanked it open.
She looked a mess. Her makeup was smeared, her hair was tangled, and she was wearing an oversized bathrobe.
"What do you want?!" Chloe snapped, her voice shrill with fury.
"Open the door, Chloe, we need to talk," Julian pushed past her into the apartment, slamming the door behind him. "Your little scheme with the corporate expense accounts blew up in our faces! The board is auditing every department you touched, and my wife—my psychotic, vindictive wife—just stripped me of everything!"
Chloe laughed—a harsh, hysterical sound that made Julian’s blood run cold.
"Your wife?!" Chloe screamed, pointing a trembling finger in his face. "You told me she was a weak, submissive doormat who didn't know anything about the business! You told me you ran the whole show! You lied to me, Julian! You used me to stroke your ego while your family actually owned the entire corporation!"
"Shut up!" Julian grabbed her by the shoulders, shaking her slightly. "We need to fix this! If we coordinate our statements to the internal audit committee—"
"There is no committee, Julian!" Chloe shoved him away, tears streaming down her face. "The compliance officers seized my personal laptop an hour ago! I’m facing felony fraud charges! My career in communications is completely dead, and it’s all because I hitched my wagon to a delusional, narcissistic loser who couldn't even keep his own wife from destroying him!"
Julian stared at her, the final pillar of his reality crumbling to dust. The mistress who had fawned over him in Napa, who had whispered promises of grandeur and freedom, now looked at him with sheer, unadulterated hatred.
"Get out," Chloe whispered, her voice shaking as she pointed toward the door. "Get out of my apartment before I call the police myself."

Defeated, humiliated, and utterly broken, Julian turned around and walked out into the rainy New York night.
He had spent one hundred and forty-four hours celebrating a fantasy of power and passion, completely blind to the fact that his entire empire was built on a foundation of sand, anchored by a woman he had foolishly underestimated.
