Chapter 4 - The Boardroom CoupThe silence in the boardroom was so thick it felt tangible.

Chloe stood frozen for a second, her chest heaving with outrage and panic, before two corporate security guards stepped forward, flanked her sides, and firmly escorted her out of the room. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her, sealing her fate.
Julian gripped the edge of the walnut table so hard his knuckles turned stark white.
"Evelyn... please," Julian whispered, his voice cracking, shedding the last pathetic remnants of his corporate bravado as he looked around the room at the board members who were actively avoiding his gaze. "Let’s not do this here. Not in front of the board. This is a private matter between us. We can go home, we can talk about counseling, we can—"
"Talk?" I interrupted, my voice devoid of mercy. "There is nothing to talk about, Julian. You spent one hundred and forty-four hours proving to me exactly where my son and I ranked in your hierarchy of priorities. And now, you are going to learn what happens when you lose the foundation beneath your feet."
I turned my attention to Robert Sterling, who cleared his throat nervously and adjusted his glasses.
"Mrs. Vale," Robert said formally. "The audit committee has reviewed the proxy revocation documents submitted by Mr. Pendelton. They are legally sound. Given the current emergency liquidity freeze and the termination of Miss Marr pending fraud investigations, the board requires a motion to stabilize executive leadership."
"I move for an immediate vote of no confidence in the current Chief Executive Officer, Julian Vale," I stated clearly, resting my hands flat on the conference table. "And I nominate Arthur Pendelton as interim CEO while a permanent executive search is conducted."
Robert nodded. "Seconded."
"All in favor of stripping Julian Vale of his executive title, revoking his corporate signing authority, and removing him from the board of directors, signify by saying aye."
Around the long table, every single hand went up.
"Aye," chorused the senior vice presidents, regional directors, and committee heads without a moment of hesitation. Loyalty in the corporate world was always tied to power, and Julian had just lost his crown.
"The ayes have it," Robert announced, striking his pen against the blotter. "Julian Vale is relieved of all executive duties effective immediately."
Julian stood there in the center of the room, staring around the table at the men and women who had nodded at his every word just twenty-four hours ago. They wouldn't even meet his eyes. They were looking down at their portfolios, distancing themselves from a sinking ship.
"You... you can't do this to me," Julian stammered, his voice rising in panic as he stepped toward my chair. "I gave ten years of my life to this company! I built your father's legacy! You're destroying everything—!"
"Guards," I said quietly.
Before Julian could take another step, the two security guards stepped forward, placing firm, heavy hands on his shoulders.
"Get your hands off me!" Julian thrashed, trying to shake them off, his face mottled with rage and humiliation. "Evelyn, you'll regret this! You'll beg me to come back! You're nothing without me—!"
"Take him out," I commanded.
They dragged him toward the double doors. As the heavy oak swung open, Julian caught one last glimpse of me sitting calmly at the head of the table, reviewing a financial ledger without even glancing up in his direction.

The doors closed, cutting off his muffled curses, and the boardroom returned to a quiet, orderly professional calm.
"Now," I said, looking up at the remaining board members with a cool, decisive smile. "Let’s review the Q3 restructuring plan. We have a company to rebuild."
