Chapter 3 - The Emergency Boardroom AmbushBy 2:00 PM that same afternoon, the thirteenth-floor executive boardroom at Vale Meridian headquarters was a pressure cooker of panic and confusion.

The mahogany conference table—a massive slab of polished walnut that usually seated twelve—was surrounded by senior vice presidents, regional directors, and board members whispering frantically among themselves. At the head of the table sat Julian, his face pale, sweat beading on his forehead despite the crisp air conditioning, his hands clenched into tight fists resting on the wood.

"This is an outrage!" Julian slammed his palm against the table, making the crystal water pitchers rattle. "Arthur Pendelton has no authority to freeze corporate accounts based on domestic disputes! My wife is... she’s emotional! She’s under a doctor’s care! This is a temporary family matter that will be resolved by tonight!"

"It doesn't look like a temporary matter, Julian," muttered Robert Sterling, the head of the audit committee, adjusting his glasses. "The New York Stock Exchange just flagged an emergency freeze on our secondary credit line because the primary family trust halted its proxy authorization. If we don't restore voting stability by market close tomorrow, our stock valuation is going to take a thirty-percent hit."

"We don't need Evelyn's proxy!" Julian snarled, standing up and pacing behind his high-backed leather chair. "I am the CEO! I run this company! Chloe, tell them—haven't our expansion metrics exceeded every target this quarter?"

Seated three seats down on the right side of the table was Chloe Marr. She wore a pristine white Chanel blazer, her blonde hair pulled back into an immaculate corporate chignon. But beneath her polished exterior, her eyes were darting nervously around the room. She had walked into the building expecting to bask in the afterglow of their Napa getaway, only to find the executive floor in a state of absolute war.

"Julian’s right," Chloe spoke up, her voice tight. "The communications team has already prepared a press release downplaying any corporate instability. We can spin this as—"

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a sharp bang.

Everyone at the table flinched and turned.

There was no process server. There was no panicked assistant.

Instead, walking through the doors was Evelyn Vale.

I wore a sharply tailored charcoal pantsuit that hung slightly looser on my frame than it had two weeks ago, a silent testament to the physical toll of the last six days. My hair was styled in sleek waves, my posture was rigid and unyielding, and my eyes carried a cold, piercing authority that commanded the entire room. Behind me walked Arthur Pendelton, carrying a thick leather briefcase, followed by two armed corporate security guards.

The boardroom went dead silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick Persian carpet.

Julian’s jaw dropped open. He stared at me as if I were a ghost risen from the grave.

"Evelyn..." he breathed out, stumbling backward against his chair. "What... what are you doing here? You... you should be resting at home—"

"Sit down, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy air like a razor blade.

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't shout. I simply walked to the head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the majority trust proxy—and pulled out the chair directly across from him.

"Evelyn, you can't just barge in here—" Julian stammered, regaining a shred of his defensive arrogance as he puffed out his chest. "This is an executive session! Unauthorized personnel are not permitted—"

"Unauthorized personnel?" I raised an eyebrow, motioning to Arthur, who stepped forward and dropped a heavy stack of legal documents onto the polished wood in front of Robert Sterling. "Julian, let me introduce you to the reality of your situation. You are standing in a building founded by my father, funded by my family trust, and sustained by fifty-two percent of voting shares that now rest entirely under my direct, independent control."

Chloe stood up from her chair, her face flushing crimson. "Look here, Mrs. Vale—you can't just walk in and disrupt corporate operations because of some petty marital jealousy—"

I turned my cold, unblinking gaze directly onto Chloe.

"Miss Marr," I said smoothly, stepping toward her end of the table. "You might want to check your corporate email before you speak. Specifically, the internal audit report detailing how corporate funds from the Napa resort accounts were expensed under false client-development codes."

Chloe gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

"Embezzlement and corporate fraud," I continued, looking back at the stunned board members. "Coupled with gross misuse of company assets for personal leisure. Effective immediately, Miss Marr’s employment at Vale Meridian is terminated with cause, her security clearance is revoked, and her desk is being cleared out by building security as we speak."

"You can't do that!" Chloe shrieked, tears of humiliation springing to her eyes. "Julian, tell her! Tell her she has no right—!"

Julian looked at Chloe, then looked at me, his face utterly devoid of color. He realized, with sickening clarity, that the woman standing before him was no longer the wife he had taken for granted. She was the executioner.
