Chapter 5 - The Security App RevelationMy hands trembled slightly as I reached across the nightstand, grabbed my iPad, and tapped the icon for our home security system app.

The high-definition cameras installed around the perimeter of the Oakridge Lane estate sprang to life on the screen. I tapped the live feed for the front porch camera.
The timestamp in the corner read 2:08 AM.
What I saw on the screen made my breath catch in my throat and my stomach plummet into a bottomless pit.
The front porch was bathed in the harsh, strobing blue and red emergency lights of three parked police cruisers. Two uniformed DuPage County sheriff’s deputies stood near the double front doors, blocking Daniel—who was disheveled, wearing sweatpants and a stained t-shirt, looking like a man who had aged ten years in three days—from stepping outside.
Behind Daniel stood Lorraine, wringing her hands, her face twisted in absolute horror and fury as she pointed frantically toward the driveway.
And parked right behind the police cruisers was a sleek, matte-black Mercedes-Maybach that I instantly recognized.
The rear door of the Maybach swung open.
A tall man stepped out into the rain-slicked driveway, holding an oversized black umbrella that shielded him from the downpour. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, immaculate and unruffled, despite the late hour.
As he stepped into the porch light, my heart stopped.
It wasn't a police officer stepping out of the luxury car. It was Viktor Kovacs—the notorious, ruthlessly brilliant international logistics mogul and corporate asset recovery specialist whom my father’s old legal firm had occasionally consulted on high-level property disputes.
Viktor walked up the stone steps with absolute, unhurried authority, ignoring Daniel’s frantic shouting. He nodded respectfully to the senior deputy, pulled a thick, leather-bound portfolio from his inner coat pocket, and handed it directly to the officer in charge.
On the live-streamed audio, I heard Viktor’s deep, resonant voice cut cleanly through the night air:
"Officer, my firm represents Ms. Claire Vance-Carter, the sole legal owner and primary beneficiary of the Oakridge Lane property trust. The individuals currently occupying this address have been served with formal federal and civil eviction notices for corporate fraud, asset misappropriation, and unauthorized squatting. If they refuse to step off the premises within the next sixty seconds, I suggest you assist them in packing their bags."
Daniel lost his mind. He lunged forward toward Viktor, screaming obscenities, his face purple with rage.
Before Daniel could take two steps, one of the deputies grabbed him firmly by the shoulder, spinning him around and pressing him flat against the porch wall with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming under the emergency lights.
Lorraine shrieked, running forward to claw at the deputy’s uniform, only to be blocked by the second officer.
I sat frozen in my hotel bed, staring at the iPad screen in absolute shock. I hadn't hired Viktor Kovacs. I hadn't even spoken to him in four years.
My phone buzzed again. A direct, encrypted text message from an unknown number.

I tapped it open.
“A proper estate requires proper protection, Claire,” the message read. “Your father was a good man, and I promised him long ago that no man would ever lay a hand on his daughter in her own home. Pack your bags for the suburbs. The house is clean.”
