Chapter 4 - The 2:13 AM VoicemailMy phone buzzed against the nightstand with a violent, vibrating hum that pierced the quiet darkness of the hotel suite.

I sat straight up in bed, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Bzzzz. Bzzzz. Bzzzz.

I reached over, my fingers brushing against the screen. It was my old personal number—the one I had left turned off, but which automatically forwarded emergency notifications to my secondary line.

Daniel was calling.

Then it stopped.

Ten seconds later, it started again.

Bzzzz. Bzzzz. Bzzzz.

I watched the screen in silence. He called four times in rapid succession, ignoring every boundary, screaming into the void of my voicemail. Then, a final notification popped up: New Voicemail (1).

My thumb hovered over the screen. Slowly, deliberately, I pressed play.

The audio crackled with static and background noise. At first, all I could hear was heavy, ragged breathing. Then, Daniel’s voice broke through the speaker—not arrogant, not threatening, but utterly shattered, shaking with hysterical, wracking sobs.

"Claire... please... you have to pick up," Daniel choked out, his voice breaking on a sob that sounded almost inhuman. "Please... something terrible happened to Mom. You have to come home. Everything is falling apart—"

In the background of the recording, Lorraine’s voice pierced the air, shrill and hysterical, screaming something unintelligible about police officers and ruined property.

Then, a completely unfamiliar voice cut through the chaos—calm, authoritative, and chillingly official.

"Sir, step away from the front door right now. Before we proceed with any further search warrants, we need to speak with the legal owner of this property."

Click.

The voicemail ended.

I sat straight up in bed, wide awake, my blood running cold.

I hadn't called the police about the house that night. Marcus and I had agreed to let the civil eviction process play out over forty-eight hours through formal sheriff service. I hadn't triggered a criminal raid or a search warrant.

So who had? And why were police officers demanding to speak with the legal owner of my house?
