Chapter 3 - The Silence Before the StormFor the next three days, I hoarded my peace like a precious treasure.

I checked into a secure, high-end extended-stay suite in downtown Chicago, far enough from the Naperville suburbs to feel like a different universe. I turned my personal phone off completely, relying instead on a burner phone configured exclusively for communication with my divorce attorney, Marcus Vance—a ruthless senior partner at a premier family law firm in the Loop whom my aunt had recommended years before she passed.

On Monday morning, Marcus and I filed three simultaneous legal actions:

An emergency petition for exclusive possession of the Oakridge Lane property, backed by the original trust deed proving my sole ownership.

A freezing order on all corporate and personal bank accounts tied to Daniel’s consultancy, citing the misappropriation of initial seed capital and marital dissipation of assets.

A formal restraining order prohibiting Daniel from approaching me, contacting me, or coming within five hundred feet of my person or residence.

“You handled this brilliantly, Claire,” Marcus said, reviewing the contents of my red folder across his polished mahogany desk. “Most victims wait until it’s too late to secure this level of financial and physical documentation. Mr. Carter is going to find out very quickly that his little tech empire was built on a foundation of sand.”

“I just want it to be over, Marcus,” I said, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window at the sprawling Chicago skyline. “I want my life back.”

“It will be over,” Marcus assured me with a confident smile. “And he’ll be paying for every single piece of it.”

By Tuesday evening, the legal papers had been successfully served. Daniel’s corporate accounts were frozen, his business credit lines were locked, and the eviction notice for the Oakridge Lane house had been handed directly to him by a county sheriff’s deputy while he was sitting in his corporate boardroom.

I knew the storm was coming. I knew Daniel’s fragile ego and explosive temper would not allow him to take defeat lying down, especially with his mother whispering poison in his ear.

I just didn't expect the first wave to hit at 2:13 in the morning.
