Chapter 1 - The Garden Trench and the Voice on the RecordingBuried waist-deep in the freezing, damp garden soil of our suburban backyard, every second felt like an eternity as my husband

High-pressure water blasted directly into the loose earth around my legs, turning the dirt into heavy mud while Julian laughed, believing I had lost control of my bladder in terror. He never noticed that the suction around my hips was rapidly weakening. I rocked my body back and forth, building momentum, and when he raised the wooden stick for another devastating strike, I violently dropped my shoulder and pulled with absolute desperation, tearing my right knee free just as the stick slammed into the mud where my stomach had been a millisecond prior. He cursed viciously and lunged to grab my hair, but his expensive shoes lost all traction in the newly flooded muck. At that exact second, the backyard gate flew open to reveal our neighbor Claire, who had heard my screams from her driveway and rushed to investigate. When Julian immediately shifted into his practiced public persona—claiming with chilling calmness that I had fallen while gardening due to pregnancy confusion—I didn't cower in shame. Instead, I pointed toward an empty blue flowerpot beside the patio chair and told Claire that my phone was inside, recording everything. Claire bolted for the pot, grabbed the device, and backed through the gate while keeping the dispatcher on speaker, her eyes widening as the audio began to play, broadcasting Julian’s cold, menacing voice detailing how he caught me trying to flee. But before the recording could fully expose his premeditated cruelty, a sharp, white-hot cramp folded violently through my lower abdomen, stealing the breath from my lungs as I frantically pressed my hands over my belly, waiting for a kick that never came.
