Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the MaskTrue to Marcus’s prediction, Daniel’s carefully constructed world began to disintegrate before the sun reached its zenith.

At 11:45 AM, my phone—which I had left turned on specifically to monitor his reactions—began buzzing incessantly.

First, it was text messages.

Claire, where are you?

Answer the phone right now!

Why are my corporate cards being declined?! What did you do?!

Claire, please... let's talk about this like adults. Don't ruin everything we built.

I watched the messages stream across my screen without opening them. The desperation in his words was palpable. The polished, unshakeable facade was completely gone, replaced by the panicked flailing of a man who realized his control had evaporated.

Then came the phone calls. Ten missed calls in fifteen minutes.

Finally, I tapped the screen and answered on speakerphone, letting my father listen in from across the desk.

“Daniel,” I said, my voice completely level.

“Claire! Thank God!” Daniel blurted out, sounding breathless and frantic. “Listen, I don't know what kind of game you’re playing, but my bank accounts are frozen! My corporate partners are calling me asking why our credit lines are locked! Did you do this?!”

“I did,” I replied calmly.

A heavy silence fell over the line. When Daniel spoke again, his voice dropped from panic into that familiar, menacing hiss I knew too well.

“You stupid bitch,” he snarled. “You think you can cut me off? You think you can destroy my life and get away with it? I’m going to ruin you. I’m going to tell everyone you’re mentally unstable, I’m going to strip you of every dime in the divorce, and—!”

“Before you finish that sentence, Daniel,” I interrupted smoothly, “you might want to check your front porch.”

“What?”

“Look outside.”

Through the speakerphone, I heard the sharp rustle of movement, followed by the heavy thud of our front door opening.

“There are two DuPage County sheriff’s deputies standing on your porch,” I continued, reading the live update Marcus had just texted me. “They’re serving you with an emergency restraining order, an eviction notice for the Oakridge Lane property, and a formal subpoena for a forensic financial audit. You have two hours to pack a single bag and vacate the premises before they escort you off the property.”

“You... you can’t do this!” Daniel screamed, his voice cracking with utter fury. “This is my house! My company!”

“It was never yours, Daniel,” I said softly. “It was just something you borrowed while you pretended to be a man.”

I tapped the screen and ended the call.

The room fell silent. Dad let out a long, slow breath, leaning back in his chair with a satisfied smirk.

“Well handled, Claire,” Dad said, raising his coffee mug in a silent toast. “Your mother would have been damn proud of you.”
