Chapter 4 - The Counter-StrikeBy 9:00 AM the following morning, the legal counter-offensive was already in motion.

Marcus Vance—a towering, sharp-dressed attorney with silver temples and a reputation for destroying corporate predators in the courtroom—sat across from my father and me in the academy’s private conference room.

He had spent the last hour reviewing every piece of evidence we provided: the photographs of Melissa, the financial audit of Daniel’s hidden accounts, the police reports, and my own detailed written statement regarding the kitchen confrontation.

Marcus closed the leather binder with a crisp snap and leaned back in his chair.

“Well, Claire,” Marcus said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “Your husband isn't just facing divorce proceedings. Between the financial fraud, the misappropriation of marital assets, and the documented history of domestic abuse involving multiple victims, Daniel is looking at potential felony charges.”

“Can we lock down his corporate accounts before he tries to hide the remaining capital?” Dad asked, leaning forward with his elbows on the table.

“Already done,” Marcus replied smoothly, pulling a certified court document from his briefcase. “I filed an emergency ex parte asset freeze at 8:00 AM this morning. Every business account, personal checking account, and credit line tied to Daniel Mercer is currently locked tight. He won't even be able to buy a cup of coffee with his company credit card by noon.”

A sense of vindication bloomed in my chest. Daniel had spent years making me feel financially dependent, trapped, and powerless. In less than twelve hours, my father and my legal team had dismantled his financial fortress entirely.

“What about his next move?” I asked. “He’s going to retaliate. He’ll try to claim I abandoned the marriage or, worse, that I assaulted him.”

Marcus chuckled softly. “Let him try. Your father’s academy has twenty-four-hour security camera coverage in the administrative office where you drafted your initial statement, and we have your digital cloud timestamp proving you left the residence voluntarily to escape physical harm. Furthermore, we’ve already contacted Melissa’s former legal counsel. She’s willing to sign an affidavit corroborating Daniel’s pattern of escalating violence.”

Marcus stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. “I’m heading over to the courthouse now to file the formal restraining order and the petition for sole possession of the primary residence. Leave everything to me, ladies and gentlemen. Mr. Mercer is about to have a very unpleasant Tuesday.”
