Chapter 2 - The Aftermath and the EscapeFor three terrifying seconds, the only sound in the kitchen was Daniel’s ragged gasps for air and the hum of the refrigerator.

I didn't tighten my grip, but I didn't release it either. I kept my weight perfectly centered over his hips, neutralizing any leverage he might have used to roll me over. My father’s second rule played in my mind: Control the space, assess the threat, and never stay longer than you have to.
“Get... get off me!” Daniel choked out, his hands clawing weakly against my forearm, his previous arrogance completely shattered.
“Listen to me very carefully, Daniel,” I said, my voice dangerously calm, steady, and devoid of any tremor. “I am walking out of this house tonight. If you try to stop me, if you try to follow me, or if you ever come near me again, I won't just pin you to the kitchen floor. I will take this laptop, along with Melissa’s police reports, your financial records, and the video security footage I just downloaded to my cloud storage, and I will hand it directly to the district attorney before you can even stand up.”
Daniel’s eyes darted toward the kitchen counter where his open laptop still sat, displaying the incriminating files.
“You... you downloaded them?” he rasped.
“Every single file,” I lied smoothly, though my phone in my pocket had indeed just finished syncing three separate folders of evidence to my lawyer’s secure portal. “You’re a fraud, Daniel. And worse than that, you’re a coward.”
I slowly relaxed my forearm, releasing his windpipe, and sprang backward with practiced agility, landing firmly on my feet while keeping my eyes locked on his every movement.
Daniel didn't lunge. He didn't try to get back up. He remained sprawled on the tile floor like a broken toy, clutching his bruised elbow and staring at me as if I were a ghost. The realization that his intimidation tactics had not only failed, but had resulted in him flat on his back courtesy of his wife, had completely broken his psychological control.
I didn't waste another second.
I turned on my heel, walked swiftly down the hallway into the bedroom, and grabbed the pre-packed duffel bag I had stashed in the back of the closet three days ago—just in case my growing suspicions about his volatile temper proved correct.
As I zipped the bag shut, Daniel stumbled into the bedroom doorway, holding his arm, his expression twisting between humiliation and desperate fury.
“You can’t leave!” he shouted, his voice cracking. “Where are you going?! Without me, you’re nothing! You’ll come back crawling!”
I picked up my bag, walked straight past him without slowing down, and headed out the front door.
The cool night air of the Chicago suburbs hit my face like a refreshing wave of freedom. I unlocked my car, tossed my duffel bag into the passenger seat, climbed inside, and locked the doors.

As I pulled out of the driveway, I glanced in my rearview mirror. Daniel was standing on the porch in his socks, silhouetted by the porch light, looking utterly defeated.
I didn't look back. I drove straight downtown, heading toward the only place where I knew I would be completely safe: my father’s academy.
