Chapter 6 - The Final Confrontation“Claire!” Ethan’s voice screamed through the speaker, frantic, unhinged, and stripped of all its corporate arrogance. “Where the hell are you?! Are you insane?! Your lawyers just locked down every commercial asset I own—my accounts are frozen, the board is staging a mutiny, and the federal marshals are auditing our subsidiary holdings!”

I listened to him panic, marveling at how small and pathetic he sounded now that the illusion of his power had been stripped away.
“You gave me twenty-four hours to disappear, Ethan,” I said, my voice steady and ice-cold. “Remember?”
There was a sharp gasp on the other end of the line.
“Claire... listen to me, I didn't know about the babies,” Ethan stammered, his voice cracking with desperate realization. “The hospital... they told me this morning... triplets? Claire, why didn't you tell me you were pregnant with triplets?”
“I tried to,” I whispered, memories of the months I stood outside his office door waiting to show him the ultrasound flashing through my mind. “You were too busy talking to Sabrina about your legacy.”
“That was a mistake—it meant nothing!” Ethan screamed, his voice turning shrill. “We can fix this! We’re husband and wife! Drop the injunctions, call off Damian Sterling, and come back to California. We can start over—”
“There is no we, Ethan,” I interrupted, the finality in my tone cutting through his hysteria like a razor blade. “The marriage ended the moment you handed me those papers. And the empire you thought you owned? It belongs to my children now.”
“You think you can ruin me and get away with it?!” Ethan roared, his true, venomous nature finally breaking through the thin veneer of desperation. “I’ll fight you in court until my last penny is gone! I’ll drag your name through the mud, I’ll take everything—”
“You don't have any pennies left to fight with, Mr. Mercer.”
The deep, resonant voice that suddenly filled the room wasn't mine.
Damian leaned down toward the phone on the table, his tone calm, measured, and terrifyingly lethal.
“Who... who is that?” Ethan choked out on the line. “Who the hell is speaking?”
“This is Damian Sterling,” Damian said smoothly. “And for the record, Mr. Mercer, your legal standing has been officially terminated. Your remaining commercial liabilities are currently being auctioned off to liquidate your personal debt. If you ever attempt to contact Mrs. Sterling or her children again, you won't be fighting in a civil courtroom. You’ll be defending yourself in a federal penitentiary.”
A choked, breathless sound came through the phone speaker.
“You... you ruined me,” Ethan whispered, the reality of his total destruction finally setting in.
“No,” Damian replied coldly. “You built a house of cards on cruelty and neglect. All I did was open the window.”
Click.
Damian reached out and ended the call, sliding the phone across the table into the trash can.
The room fell silent once more, save for the hum of the city outside and the steady beating of our hearts.
Damian straightened up, looking down at me with an expression of profound, quiet intensity.

“It’s over,” he said softly.
I looked up into his gray eyes, feeling a profound sense of lightness and peace that I had never known in my entire life. The storm outside had completely cleared, leaving the Manhattan sky brilliant, vast, and open.
