Chapter 5 - The Sterling Legacy and the TrapThe realization hit us like a physical blow.

Richard Vance wasn't the masterminding architect of the corporate coup; he was simply the front man—the hungry lawyer willing to take the risks while Arthur Sterling pulled the strings from the shadows of Geneva.

"He set us up," Sloan said, her hands shaking as she gripped the back of my leather chair for support. "When we got married, Uncle Arthur insisted on structuring the family trust with clauses that gave him veto power over our corporate holdings. He didn't approve of you, Vincent. He thought you were a ruthless upstart who didn't belong in the Sterling bloodline. He wanted control of your technology patents, and he wanted me isolated so I couldn't interfere."

I stood up, pulling Sloan into my arms, feeling the tremors running through her frame.

"He's not going to get either," I said, my voice dropping into a lethal, resolute hum. "If Arthur thinks he can play chess with my family, he's about to find out what happens when you corner a man who has nothing left to lose."

"Vincent, what are you going to do?" she asked, looking up at me with wide, frightened eyes. "Arthur is tied into international banking cartels. He has political immunity in three cantons in Switzerland. You can't just fight him the way you fought Richard."

"I'm not going to fight him in a boardroom," I replied calmly. "I'm going to draw him out into the open."

Within two hours, the strategy was locked in.

We didn't call the federal marshals yet. We didn't leak the audio file to the press. Instead, we executed a classic financial trap—the kind of high-stakes corporate maneuver that legends are written about on Wall Street.

Using my executive override privileges before the SEC freeze took full effect, I publicly announced an emergency press conference for noon that day at the Lennox Global headquarters. The headline sent shockwaves through international markets:

LENNOX GLOBAL TO UNILATERALLY DISSOLVE CORE PATENT PORTFOLIO AND TRANSFER ALL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY TO AN UNNAMED PRIVATE ENTITY.

It was the ultimate nuclear option. Dissolving the patents meant destroying the multi-billion-dollar valuation of the company entirely.

By 9:00 a.m., my private phone began to ring.

I stared at the incoming international caller ID flashing on the screen: GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - PRIVATE LINE.

I let it ring three times before swiping answer and putting it on speaker so Sloan could hear every word.

"Arthur," I said smoothly, leaning back in my leather chair.

“Have you lost your absolute mind, Vincent?!” Arthur Sterling’s voice boomed through the speaker, furious, panicked, and entirely stripped of its usual aristocratic composure. “You cannot dissolve the core portfolio! Those patents belong to the Sterling trust! You're destroying billions of dollars in enterprise value out of sheer spite!”

"My company, my rules, Arthur," I replied, my tone infuriatingly casual. "If I can't run it free of corporate saboteurs and backstabbing relatives, nobody can."

A heavy, furious silence hung on the line for several seconds. Then, Arthur let out a harsh, calculated laugh.

“You think you're clever, don't you? You think a theatrical press conference is going to save you? You don't have the legal authority to execute the transfer without the primary trustee's signature.”

"And who might that be?" I asked innocently. “Me, you arrogant little—”

Before Arthur could finish his sentence, the heavy oak door of my home study swung open with a sharp click.

Standing in the doorway, flanked by two federal marshals and holding a court-issued subpoena, was Miller, the DOJ investigator.

"Mr. Sterling," Miller spoke loudly into my desk speakerphone, holding his badge up to the recording equipment. "This is Special Agent Miller with the United States Department of Justice. You are currently broadcasting your voice across an open federal wiretap investigating international wire fraud and racketeering. Surrender your international travel credentials immediately, or we will have Interpol execute an emergency red notice on your estate in Geneva within the hour."

The line went completely dead.
