Chapter 6 - The Freezing of the EmpireThe fallout hit the Mercer family with the devastating efficiency of a category-five hurricane.

Within forty-eight hours of Sunday dinner, federal agents executed search warrants on Vantage Real Estate Holdings LLC, seizing all digital servers, corporate ledgers, and property deeds associated with Raymond Mercer’s development network. Bank accounts across three separate financial institutions were frozen under emergency asset-preservation orders tied to wire fraud and illicit commingling of marital and corporate funds.
I sat in Marcus Vance’s corner office on the twelfth floor of the federal courthouse downtown, watching the midday traffic crawl along the Chicago river through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
My phone had not stopped buzzing since Sunday night.
Lukas had called seventy-four times. He had sent forty text messages ranging from pathetic apologies (“Evelyn, please, I was pressured by my parents, I love you!”) to unhinged threats (“You’ve ruined my family, you’ll never see a dime of settlement money!”). Ingrid had tried calling twice before her lawyer advised her to throw her phone into Lake Michigan.
“Well,” Marcus said, leaning against the edge of his desk with a cup of black coffee, watching me with an amused expression. “I must say, watching your husband’s face turn the color of skim milk when you replied in fluent German is a moment I’m going to treasure for the rest of my career.”
I laughed softly, taking a sip of my own coffee. “It was deeply satisfying, I won't deny that. How is Sophia holding up?”
“She’s cooperating fully,” Marcus replied. “Her affidavit has been filed. She’s officially separated herself from the Mercers' legal team, and my office has granted her immunity in exchange for her testimony regarding the financial coercion and shell-company setups orchestrated by Raymond. She’s moving back to San Diego next week to live with her sister and raise her baby in peace, far away from the toxic shadow of the Mercer family.”
“Good,” I said sincerely. “No child deserves to be born into a trap.”
“As for your civil proceedings,” Marcus continued, opening a leather-bound folio. “Your divorce petition was filed this morning at 9:00 AM sharp. Because of the proven dissipation of marital assets, hidden offshore accounts, and premeditated emotional abuse, our legal team is suing for one hundred percent of the remaining liquid marital assets, full ownership of the Lincoln Park townhouse free and clear of their mortgage loans, and a punitive damages clause that will effectively strip Lukas of his corporate shares in Mercer Development.”
I looked out the window at the gleaming Chicago skyline. Six months ago, I had been weeping in a sterile clinic recovery room, believing my life was empty because I couldn't conceive a child with a man who claimed to love me.

Now, looking back at the wreckage of my marriage, I realized the universe hadn't cursed me with infertility. It had simply cleared the slate so I could build an empire of my own.
“Let’s close the audit, Marcus,” I said, a confident smile touching my lips. “It’s time to finalize the paperwork.”
