Chapter 3 - The Counter-StrategyThe dim lighting of The Bedford in Wicker Park cast a warm amber glow over the distressed leather booth where Marcus and I sat. The ambient chatter of the trendy cocktail lounge muffled our voices, creating a safe bubble of conspiracy amid the bustling Chicago night.

Marcus slid a manila folder across the mahogany table after listening intently for over twenty minutes as I laid out every single bank statement, wire transfer receipt, and legal draft I had uncovered.
“Well,” Marcus said, adjusting his silver-rimmed glasses and raising his martini glass. “I must admit, Evelyn, your auditing skills are terrifying. If you ever decide to leave finance, the Department of Justice would welcome you with open arms.”
“Save the recruitment pitch for later, Marcus,” I said, taking a slow sip of my gimlet. “Tell me what we have. Can we freeze those accounts?”
Marcus’s expression shifted instantly from friendly colleague to razor-sharp federal prosecutor. He flipped open the folder, pointing to the wire transfer logs involving Vantage Real Estate Holdings LLC.
“We have them dead to rights on multiple counts,” Marcus explained, his voice dropping into a professional register. “First, Lukas used marital assets—funds accumulated during your marriage—to finance an apartment and living expenses for a mistress without your consent or knowledge. Under Illinois law, that constitutes dissipation of marital assets. Second, and far more seriously, the LLC itself is funded in part by shell accounts managed by Raymond Mercer, which federal investigators have been tracking for suspected tax evasion and commercial real estate kickbacks for over a year.”
I blinked, genuinely surprised. “Raymond? My father-in-law?”
“The very same,” Marcus nodded. “The Mercers are old money in Chicago, but old money frequently cuts corners when property development grants are on the line. By commingling your marital funds with their corporate shell accounts, Lukas has inadvertently opened his entire family’s financial portfolio to federal scrutiny.”
“And the custody trap?” I asked, leaning forward. “What about the legal documents they drafted to force me into raising Sophia’s child?”
A cold, humorless smile touched Marcus’s lips. “That’s the beauty of it, Evelyn. Those documents are legally worthless unless signed under duress or voluntary consent. However, we can use them as evidence of premeditated emotional abuse and conspiracy to commit fraud in your impending divorce proceedings. More importantly, Sophia Weber has already reached out to my office independently. She’s terrified of the Mercers, she wants out of their control, and she’s willing to sign a sworn affidavit detailing how Lukas and his parents coerced her into keeping the baby as part of their inheritance scheme.”
Everything was falling into place with mathematical precision. The puzzle pieces I had gathered over the last forty-eight hours formed a complete picture of arrogance, greed, and absolute contempt for my intelligence.
“What do you need me to do?” I asked quietly.
Marcus reached across the table and placed his hand gently over mine. “Play along. Act like the devoted, unsuspecting wife. Attend Sunday dinner this weekend at their Pacific Heights mansion. Let them think their plan is working to absolute perfection.”
“And when they drop the bomb about the baby?”
“Let them lay out every single detail in German, assuming you still understand nothing,” Marcus said, his eyes glittering with anticipation. “Record every second of it. Once they hand over their master plan and present the paperwork for you to sign, you pull out your phone, switch to fluent English, read them their legal rights, and walk out the front door. I’ll have federal marshals and divorce attorneys standing by at the end of the driveway.”

I looked down at our joined hands, feeling a profound sense of liberation washing away years of self-doubt.
“Deal,” I whispered.
