Chapter 1 - The Confession on the LineThe hum of the coffee shop espresso machine buzzed in the background like a distant alarm, but all I could hear was the steady, rhythmic sound of my own breath. Sophia Weber. The name alone carried the weight of a ghost—a ghost I had foolishly believed was buried years ago in a different state, a different life.

“Evelyn? Are you still there?” her voice came through the receiver, thin and trembling, yet laced with an undeniable edge of desperation.

“I’m here,” I said, keeping my voice terrifyingly calm. Two years of corporate financial auditing had taught me one vital lesson: never let the opponent know you see the trap until you are ready to spring it. “What do you want, Sophia?”

A shaky sigh rattled through the phone line. “I know this is insane. I know you probably hate me. But I didn't have a choice. Lukas told me... he promised me you would understand.”

My grip on the ceramic coffee cup tightened so hard my knuckles turned white. “Lukas told you that I would understand what? That my husband knocked up his ex-girlfriend while I was undergoing hormone treatments to carry his child?”

A sharp intake of breath on the other end. “So... you know.”

“I know enough,” I lied smoothly, keeping the extent of my knowledge hidden. In negotiations, information was currency. “Tell me why you’re calling me, Sophia. Because if you’re looking for sympathy, you’ve dialed the wrong number.”

“I’m not looking for sympathy,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I’m looking for a way out. Lukas and his parents... they aren't planning what you think they’re planning. It’s worse. They’re drafting legal documents. They’re planning to take custody of this baby the moment it’s born and force you into a guardianship trap. They think because you’ve struggled with infertility, you’ll be so desperate to raise a child that you won't care whose blood is in its veins. But I won't let them take my child away. And I won't let them use you as an incubator for their sick family dynasty.”

The words hit me like a physical blow. A guardianship trap. They weren't just planning to gaslight me into accepting another woman’s child; they were actively engineering a legal framework behind my back to saddle me with the maternal responsibility while Lukas and his mother controlled the narrative.

“Why are you telling me this?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at the sunlit Chicago street outside the window. “If you hated me, why warn me?”

“Because Lukas isn't the man you think he is,” Sophia cried softly. “He lied to me too. He told me you two were getting a divorce, that you were separated, that he was free. The moment I told him I was pregnant, he panicked—not because of you, but because of his father. Raymond Mercer—sorry, Raymond and Ingrid hold the purse strings. If Lukas doesn't produce a legitimate heir according to their strict family rules, he gets cut out of the real estate trust. This whole thing... the baby, the lies, the dinner parties—it’s all a corporate chess match to them.”

My mind raced. Raymond Mercer. The family real estate empire. It all clicked into place. The missing money, the mysterious business trips, the constant subtle criticisms of my background during Sunday dinners where they switched to German to mock my posture or my cooking. I was never a wife to them. I was a project. A compliant, tax-paying, financially stable domestic asset meant to clean up their son’s mess.

“Thank you for the update, Sophia,” I said, my tone freezing over into pure corporate steel.

“Wait! What are you going to do?”

“What any good auditor does,” I replied quietly. “I’m going to audit the books.”

I hung up before she could say another word. I sat in the booth for three full minutes, letting the rage settle deep into my bones, converting itself into cold, blinding clarity. Lukas thought he had a docile, heartbroken wife who would cry into her pillow and accept whatever crumbs of affection he tossed her way.

He had no idea what a compliance auditor with access to joint financial records was capable of unearthing.
