Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup and Victoria’s Betrayal

By noon, the glass-walled executive boardroom on the fortieth floor of the Vance Tower in downtown Chicago felt less like a center of high finance and more like a crime scene.

The heavy mahogany doors flew open, and Julian strode in, his hair slightly disheveled, his suit jacket unbuttoned, looking every bit a man on the verge of total psychological collapse. Seated around the massive conference table were the senior members of the board, alongside his stern, elderly father, Arthur Vance, whose face was purple with fury.

"Explain this, Julian," Arthur barked, slamming a printed federal injunction onto the table. "Federal agents just raided our compliance office! The stock has plunged twenty-two percent in three hours, and institutional investors are threatening to pull billions unless we stabilize the firm immediately!"

"It’s a hostile maneuver," Julian stammered, gripping the edge of the table. "My wife—Elena—she somehow accessed historical ledgers before we separated. She’s trying to extort me through a bitter divorce proceeding!"

"Your wife?" Arthur roared, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the hardwood. "You brought a liability into this family, hid a bastard child with your executive assistant, and allowed a disgruntled spouse to walk out of a hospital with enough evidence to invite federal prosecutors into our vault? You fool!"

Before Julian could defend himself, the side door of the boardroom opened quietly.

Victoria walked in. She wasn't carrying her usual executive tablet. Instead, she wore a designer coat and carried a thick manila folder of her own. Her expression was completely devoid of the deferential smile she had worn for years around the office.

Julian stared at her in utter shock. "Victoria? What are you doing here? Get out of here right now."

Victoria didn't look at him with love or fear; she looked at him with clinical coldness. She walked straight to Arthur Vance’s end of the table and placed the manila folder down before the patriarch.

"Mr. Vance," Victoria said clearly, her voice echoing in the tense silence of the room. "I think it’s time you saw what your son has been doing behind your back regarding my son's trust fund and my personal indemnification agreement."

Julian’s blood ran cold. "Victoria... what is this?"

"Self-preservation, Julian," Victoria replied smoothly without blinking. "You promised me that once Elena was out of the picture and your divorce settlement was finalized, you would legally register our son and transfer ten percent of Vance Holdings stock into my name. But looking at these federal indictments, your ship is sinking. I am not going down to the bottom of the ocean for your incompetence."

Arthur opened the folder. Within seconds, his eyes widened in sheer horror as he read the signed promissory notes and secret agreements Julian had made with Victoria—agreements funded directly by siphoning capital from the family’s primary philanthropic trust.

Arthur slowly raised his head, looking at his son with a gaze colder than winter ice.

"Hand over your office keys, Julian," Arthur whispered, his voice shaking with lethal rage. "You are stripped of your title, your shares, and your inheritance. As far as the Vance family is concerned, you no longer exist."
