Chapter 3 - The Morning After and the Empty Room

At 8:30 a.m., Julian Vance strode briskly down the polished corridors of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, holding a fresh bouquet of white lilies and a designer pastry box from a high-end bakery in the Loop. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his silver-framed cufflinks catching the morning light. His conversation with Victoria late last night had been tense—she was demanding to know when he would officially announce their engagement and integrate their son into the primary estate—but Julian had reassured her that Elena would be neatly managed by noon.

He pushed open the door to room 412 with a confident smile, ready to deploy his charm, hand over a generous settlement agreement, and get the paperwork signed before the afternoon board meeting.

The smile died instantly on his face.

The room was utterly empty. The bed was neatly made, hospital corners tucked with absolute precision. The tray table was cleared. The bassinet was pushed against the wall, completely bare.

"What is the meaning of this?" Julian muttered, marching into the bathroom. Empty. He checked the small closet—her overnight bag was gone.

Panic, sharp and cold, pierced through his corporate composure. He rushed out into the hallway and grabbed the arm of the nearest nurse rushing past with a medication cart.

"Excuse me! Where is the patient from room 412? Elena Vance and her newborn child?"

The nurse blinked, looking confused. "Oh, Mr. Vance? I thought you knew. Mrs. Vance checked out around three o'clock this morning. She signed an AMA—Against Medical Advice—form, gathered her belongings, and left with a private party."

Julian’s breath hitched. "She left? Without me? Did she say where she was going?"

Before the nurse could answer, a sharp chime echoed from the pocket of his tailored trousers. Julian pulled out his smartphone. It was a push notification from his corporate banking app.

ALERT: Unauthorized access detected on primary corporate reserve account #8841.

Seconds later, his phone rang violently. It wasn't an assistant. It was Charles Vane, the senior corporate legal counsel for Vance Holdings, shouting frantically through the speaker.

"Julian! Where the hell are you? The U.S. Attorney’s office just slapped an emergency federal freeze on all Vance Holdings accounts! Federal marshals are walking into the lobby right now with search warrants for corporate fraud and asset concealment!"

Julian staggered backward, his shoulder slamming hard against the hospital wall. The bouquet of white lilies slipped from his hand, scattering across the sterile linoleum floor.

"Fraud?" Julian choked out, his voice trembling with disbelief. "That's impossible. Who authorized an audit?"

"We don't know!" Vane yelled over the roar of voices in the background of the law firm. "Whoever filed the injunction has master-level encryption keys and direct evidence linking the offshore shell accounts to your personal signature! Julian, the board is calling an emergency vote to strip you of your CEO title!"

Julian stared blankly at the empty bassinet in room 412. The room seemed to spin around him as the horrifying, crystal-clear truth finally slammed into his brain.

Elena hadn't been a helpless, broken mother. She had been an accountant playing a long game, and she had just detonated his entire world before the sun had even fully risen.
