Chapter 5 - The Spider’s WebThe silence in the underground command center was heavier than a tomb. Every pair of eyes in the room—hardened enforcers, veteran capos, and Carmine himself—was locked onto me like crosshairs on a firing range.

“Mr. Carmine, I didn't—” I started, my voice trembling as panic threatened to tear through my composure.
“Shut your mouth,” Carmine snarled, drawing his pistol halfway from its holster with a sharp shing. He looked toward Gabriel, his face twisted with grim determination. “I told you from day one, Boss. Bringing an outsider into the inner circle was a fatal mistake. She plays the hero by pulling threads out of your shoulder, and suddenly she has full access to the estate, the safes, and our operational logs. She’s an FBI plant.”
Gabriel didn't move. He stood completely still beneath the flickering glow of the monitor screens, his face cast in deep, impenetrable shadows. He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't shout. He just stared at me, his dark eyes searching my face with an agonizing, unreadable intensity.
“Gabriel,” I whispered, taking a slow step forward, fighting back the hot tears stinging my eyes. “You know me. You know where I came from. My mother worked herself to death in a factory. I don't even know what an FBI agent looks like. That recording... it’s a setup. Someone wants you to doubt me.”
“They all say it’s a setup, Tessa,” Carmine interrupted coldly, taking a step closer, raising his gun barrel slightly. “And right now, the federal wiretap has your name explicitly attached to the leak. Boss, give the order. We interrogate her now, or the feds raid our docks by morning.”
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped animal. I looked past Carmine, locking my gaze onto Gabriel. If he believed them, I was dead before I hit the floor. There would be no trial, no explanations—just a shallow grave in the New Jersey wetlands.
Gabriel slowly exhaled a long, heavy breath. He reached up, rubbing the back of his neck where the necrotic wound had nearly killed him weeks ago.
“Carmine,” Gabriel said, his voice dangerously quiet.
“Yes, Boss?”
“Lower your weapon.”
Carmine froze, his eyes widening in disbelief. “Gabriel, are you insane?! The audio file—”
“I said, lower your weapon,” Gabriel repeated, his voice dropping into an absolute, thundering command that made the veteran underboss flinch and slowly slide his pistol back into its holster.
Gabriel walked slowly across the concrete floor until he stood directly in front of me. He didn't look like a mob boss about to execute a traitor; he looked like a man weighing the heavy, brutal cost of trust in a world built entirely on lies.
“Do you know why Dante failed to kill me, Tessa?” Gabriel asked softly, his eyes boring straight into my soul.
“Because... because his methods were sloppy,” I answered, my voice shaking.
“No,” Gabriel corrected quietly. “Dante failed because he thought he was the smartest man in the room. He underestimated everyone around him—especially the people he considered invisible.”
Gabriel turned back to face the glowing monitors, pointing a finger at the audio waveform still frozen on the screen.
“The federal task force isn't stupid,” Gabriel continued, his mind working through the tactical puzzle with terrifying precision. “If the FBI actually had a high-level asset inside my inner circle feeding them information, they would never burn that asset by broadcasting her name over an intercepted domestic wiretap that my tech team routinely monitors. That recording wasn't an accident. It was a deliberate broadcast.”
Carmine’s brow furrowed as the pieces began to click into place. “A planted leak. Someone wanted us to find it.”
“Exactly,” Gabriel nodded grimly. “They wanted us to panic. They wanted us to turn on our own people, execute our best defenses, and tear the family apart from the inside out while the real traitor makes their move.”
Gabriel turned back to me, his expression softening just a fraction, revealing a fierce, protective warmth that only belonged to us.
“You’re not an FBI plant, Tessa,” Gabriel stated with absolute, unshakeable certainty. “You’re the only reason I’m standing here today. But whoever made that recording is still sitting at our table.”
A cold fury settled deep in my chest, replacing the fear that had paralyzed me moments before. They had tried to frame me. They had tried to use my mother’s memory, my humble background, and my loyalty as tools to get me executed.

“Gabriel,” I said, stepping forward, my voice steady and ice-cold. “Let me help you find them.”
Gabriel looked at me, a dangerous, approving smile slowly spreading across his scarred face. “I thought you’d never ask.”
