Chapter 4 - Shadows of the UnderworldThe fallout from Dante’s betrayal sent violent tremors through the New York underworld. Within forty-eight hours, the Falcone family’s vast network of shipping ports, financial fronts, and social clubs went into a state of high alert. Capos who had secretly pledged loyalty to Dante during his quiet power grab were systematically rooted out, interrogated, and dealt with in the cold, efficient manner the syndicate was famous for.

Yet, inside the sprawling stone fortress of the Falcone estate, life had shifted around me in a way I never could have anticipated.
I was no longer scrubbing the grand foyer floors. Gabriel had officially reassigned me as his personal executive coordinator—a title that shielded me with his direct protection while keeping me close enough to act as his eyes and ears. The other staff members now walked on eggshells around me, whispering in the hallways about the maid who had stared down Dante Falcone and lived to tell the tale.
Late one evening, the rain lashed heavily against the stained-glass windows of Gabriel’s private study.
I stood by the mahogany desk, organizing a stack of financial manifests that had arrived from the Brooklyn docks, when Gabriel walked in. He had discarded the arm sling entirely, though a slight stiffness remained in his right shoulder. He poured two fingers of aged bourbon into a heavy crystal glass, taking a slow sip before looking at me over the rim.
“You’re working too late, Tessa,” Gabriel said, his voice carrying that low, gravelly warmth that only seemed to surface when we were alone.
“The manifests for the European shipments need to be reconciled before the morning board meeting, Mr. Falcone,” I replied, not looking up from the papers. “If the numbers don't match the port authority logs, Carmine will have a migraine by noon.”
Gabriel chuckled softly, walking over to the desk and setting his glass down. He placed a hand over the papers, gently stopping my pen.
“Call me Gabriel,” he said, his dark eyes locking onto mine. “When we are in this room, the title belongs outside the door.”
I swallowed hard, feeling the magnetic pull of his presence. In the weeks since the incident, I had learned that beneath the brutal, unyielding exterior of New York’s most feared Mafia boss lay a sharp, strategic mind and a terrifyingly deep capacity for loyalty. He wasn't just a criminal; he was an emperor holding a crumbling kingdom together against external enemies and internal traitors.
“Gabriel,” I whispered, the name tasting foreign yet natural on my tongue.
Before he could answer, the secure intercom on his desk buzzed sharply.
Carmine’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding more tense and urgent than I had ever heard him. “Boss. You need to come down to the security monitoring room right now. We just intercepted a transmission from the federal task force tracking our South American supply lines.”
Gabriel’s expression hardened instantly, all warmth vanishing from his features. He spun away from the desk, grabbing his dark wool overcoat from the rack by the door.
“Come with me,” he ordered, gesturing for me to follow.
We hurried down through the subterranean corridors of the estate, past the heavy steel doors of the wine cellar, straight into the high-tech command center hidden beneath the mansion. Banks of glowing monitors lined the walls, displaying live satellite feeds of the city, encrypted data streams, and wiretap transcripts.
Carmine stood over a central workstation, his face carved from dark stone, staring at a flashing red waveform on the main screen.
“Play it again,” Gabriel commanded as we stepped into the room.
Carmine hit a keystroke, and a harsh, metallic audio recording began to play through the speakers.
“...the Falcone internal leak has been contained with Dante’s arrest,” an unidentified federal agent’s voice crackled through the static. “But don't worry about the syndicate falling apart. Our primary asset inside the Falcone inner circle is still fully operational. The girl they promoted—Tessa—is currently positioned right beside Gabriel. Once she secures the master encryption keys from his private safe, the entire family will crumble from the top down.”
The room went dead, suffocatingly silent.
My breath caught in my throat. My blood ran ice-cold.
The girl they promoted—Tessa.
Every single person in the security room slowly turned their heads. Carmine’s hand instinctively dropped toward his holster, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure, lethal suspicion. Enforcers standing near the door shifted their weight, their hands resting on their weapons.

I stood frozen in the center of the room, the ground seemingly dropping out from beneath my feet.
“Boss,” Carmine whispered, his voice dangerously low, his eyes fixed on me. “Looks like the rat was wearing a maid’s uniform all along.”
