Chapter 1 - The Paper in the SafeThe question hung in the quiet maternity suite overlooking Lake Michigan, cold and heavy as iron. Outside, the night sky over Chicago was dark, save for the flickering lights of the city's highest towers.

I looked down at twelve-day-old Leo sleeping in his bassinet, his small chest rising and falling in steady, unbroken rhythms. His tiny, delicate hands were curled into tight fists. He was completely unaware that his father was currently raising a crystal glass in a grand downtown ballroom, introducing another woman’s daughter as the true heiress to the Moretti fortune.

"Claire?" Rebecca’s voice came sharply through the receiver. "Answer me. Does Adrian know you have the original, unredacted license?"

"He thinks it was destroyed," I spoke softly into the phone, my voice steady, devoid of the weeping weakness Adrian had depended on for eight years. "When we married in that small chapel in Nevada, his men took what they thought were all the legal filings. They substituted a forged annulment record into the secondary county database six months later. But the clerk who processed our original paper was a old friend of my late father. She mailed the master original to my private safety deposit box in Boston before his men ever cleared the counter."

Rebecca let out a long, low exhale. "Claire... if that paper is real and unrevoked, it means every public asset, every offshore shell company, and every real estate development Adrian acquired over the last eight years was purchased while legally married to you under joint-marital property laws."

"Eighty percent of his empire," I clarified, my hazel eyes fixing on the city lights. "Including the hotel where he is holding that celebration tonight."

"He believes he's invincible," Rebecca noted, the sound of her pen scratching across legal pads echoing over the line. "He thinks you are isolated in that hospital room with no money, no legal team, and no way out."

"He built a golden cage and assumed I would stay in it forever because I loved him," I said. "He forgot that before I met him, I managed corporate logistics for my family's firm. I know how his networks operate, Rebecca. I know where the money goes."

"What do you want me to do first?" she asked.

I took a slow, deep breath, feeling my strength return to my body for the first time since Leo’s birth.

"File the ex-parte motion for full legal and physical custody of Leo in the Cook County Family Court," I instructed flatly. "Attach a copy of the Nevada marriage certificate. And then... freeze his primary corporate accounts before the market opens tomorrow morning."
