Chapter 6 - The Fallout on the Fortieth FloorThe digital clock on my desk blinked brightly: 7:59 AM.

The forty-of-forty floor of Moretti Enterprises was dead silent, save for the faint, rhythmic hum of the central air conditioning and the distant, muffled sound of a printer down the hall.

I sat at my desk, dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer and crisp white silk blouse, my dark hair pinned back in its usual efficient knot. In front of me sat my laptop, an open calendar, and a stack of pending acquisition contracts that needed Luca’s signature by noon.

Everything looked normal.

Except for the small black velvet box sitting right in the center of my blotter—the half-million-dollar Cartier sapphire catching the morning sunlight pouring through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

And except for the fact that my entire phone was buzzing off the hook.

My personal cell had received forty-three text messages in the last ten minutes. My work email had notifications from three different financial blogs asking for confirmation on whether Moretti Enterprises was about to undergo a "dynastic merger." Even the corporate Slack channel was suspiciously quiet, filled with nervous whispers from the legal department.

The private elevator chime pinged down the hall.

Footsteps echoed sharply against the polished marble floor. Heavy, purposeful, unhurried.

The glass double doors of Luca’s office swung open.

Luca walked in wearing a charcoal three-tier suit, his silk tie impeccably knotted, looking every bit the ruthless titan of industry who commanded billions in global assets. But as his dark eyes locked onto me across the open-plan office, the cold corporate mask vanished.

He didn't go into his office. He walked straight toward my desk, stopping just two feet away, resting his hands casually on the edge of the mahogany partition.

“You’re early,” I said, keeping my voice remarkably steady, though my pulse was doing acrobatics.

“So are the tabloids,” Luca replied, nodding toward the stack of morning newspapers piled on the credenza behind me. Every single major financial and gossip daily featured a full-page photo of us stepping out of the Beaumont Hotel, my hand resting against his arm, the caption screaming: THE ICE KING’S QUEEN: LUCA MORETTI’S MILLION-DOLLAR SECRET.

“I see our fake relationship is holding up to public scrutiny,” I remarked dryly, picking up a pen and tapping it against my notepad.

“It wasn't fake last night,” Luca said, his voice low and uncompromising.

Before I could respond, the glass doors of the executive floor opened again, and Richard Sterling strode in uninvited, trailed nervously by his legal counsel and a visibly sweating PR manager.

Sterling didn't look like he’d slept. His silver hair was slightly disheveled, and his face was flushed with predatory excitement.

“Moretti!” Sterling barked, marching right past the partition toward Luca’s office before freezing when he saw us standing so close together. Sterling’s eyes darted from Luca to me, then down to the Cartier sapphire box sitting on my desk. A nasty, triumphant smile spread across his face.

“Well, well,” Sterling sneered, crossing his arms. “I see the rumors are true. The ruthless Luca Moretti has been sidelined by his own secretary. Tell me, Miss Martinez, does your job description include insider trading, or are you just managing his personal portfolio now?”

The temperature on the fortieth floor plummeted instantly.

Luca didn't turn around to face Sterling right away. He stood completely still, his back to the older man, his jaw locked so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek.

When Luca finally turned around, his eyes were pools of absolute ice.

“Sterling,” Luca said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, lethal baritone that had destroyed corporate dynasties. “You have exactly ten seconds to turn around, walk back into that elevator, and leave my floor before I destroy every commercial real estate holding your firm owns.”

Sterling scoffed, though a flicker of genuine unease crossed his eyes. “You can’t threaten me, Luca! The board is already calling an emergency meeting. Bringing your unverified, low-level assistant into high society and dropping half a million on jewelry while negotiating municipal zoning is a massive conflict of interest! The SEC is going to have a field day with—”

Before Sterling could finish his sentence, Luca moved with terrifying speed.

He didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. He simply closed the distance between them, standing towering over Sterling with such absolute, crushing authority that the older man instinctively took a step back.

“My company, my board, and my life are none of your concern,” Luca said, every word dripping with venom. “And if you ever—ever—speak to Sophia with that tone again, I won't just ruin your real estate portfolio. I will strip you of every asset, every title, and every membership you hold in this city until you are begging on the steps of the courthouse.”

Sterling swallowed hard, his face turning the color of spoiled milk. He looked at Luca’s dead-cold eyes, realized the billionaire wasn't bluffing, and slowly backed away toward the elevators.

“This isn't over, Moretti,” Sterling muttered defensively, turning on his heel and practically sprinting into the elevator with his legal team trailing behind him.

The elevator doors chimed shut.

Silence descended once more across the fortieth floor.

Luca stood there for a long moment, breathing heavily, before turning slowly back toward my desk. The lethal fury in his eyes melted away instantly, replaced by a raw, quiet intensity as he looked down at me.

“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice rough.

I looked up at him—at the man who had risked his reputation, his board’s approval, and half a million dollars just to make sure nobody ever looked down on me again.

“I’m fine, Mr. Moretti,” I whispered, a slow smile touching my lips. “Though I think your PR department is going to quit by noon.”

May you like

Luca let out a dark, rich laugh, leaning over my desk and resting his hands on either side of my keyboard.

“Let them quit,” Luca murmured, his face inches from mine. “I have a much better executive secretary in mind to run the whole empire anyway.”
