Chapter 4 - The AscentMy arm rested lightly in the crook of Richard Mercer’s elbow.

The midnight-blue velvet of my gown caught every flicker of light from the chandeliers, sparkling like a galaxy against the dark room. Every eye in the ballroom was locked on us, but I didn't flinch. I raised my chin, my gaze sweeping deliberately over the sea of gasping faces until I found the one man who matter-of-factly thought he had banished me to obscurity.

Dominic looked like he had seen a ghost.

His face had gone completely gray. The arrogant smirk had vanished, replaced by a slack-jawed expression of sheer terror. Beside him, Vanessa’s mouth hung open, her hand frozen mid-gesture on Dominic’s lapel.

Richard and I began our slow, deliberate descent down the grand staircase. Each step echoed with the steady, rhythmic click of my heels against the stone.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

Whispers erupted through the crowd like wildfire.

“Isn’t that Dominic Vance’s wife?”

“What is she doing with Richard Mercer?”

“I heard Mercer hasn’t attended a public gala in five years... why is he walking with her?”

Dominic staggered forward, pushing past a cluster of startled investors, his eyes wide and bloodshot. He looked like a man who had just realized he was standing on a trapdoor over an active volcano.

“Evelyn?!” Dominic hissed, his voice cracking slightly as he reached the base of the stairs, blocking our path. “What the hell is the meaning of this? What are you doing with him?!”

Richard stopped walking. He didn't look angry; he looked amused, like a cat watching a trapped mouse squirming in the corner.

I looked down at my husband—no, my soon-to-be-ex-husband—with cool, detached pity.

“Good evening, Dominic,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet ballroom. “I thought you said I wasn't cut out for this life.”

Dominic ignored me, his frantic gaze darting up to Richard. “Mr. Mercer... I don't know what kind of game my wife—my estranged wife—is playing here, but she has no business being on this dais. She’s unstable. She doesn't represent Vale Holdings—”

“Vale Holdings?” Richard interrupted, his voice cutting through the hall like a razor blade. “Son, you don't own Vale Holdings. You’re just the manager.”

The color drained entirely from Dominic’s face.

“What... what are you talking about?” Dominic stammered.

“Ask your wife,” Richard replied smoothly, stepping aside and gesturing toward me with an open palm. “She’s the majority shareholder.”
