Chapter 3 - The Grand BallroomThe Meridian Winter Gala was held inside the historic grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel, a cavernous hall dripping with crystal chandeliers, gilded moldings, and the intoxicating scent of expensive perfume, old money, and corporate ambition.

Inside, the room was a sea of black-tie elegance. Politicians laughed with real estate moguls, and socialites sipped vintage Dom Pérignon while string quartets played softly from the elevated balcony.
Near the center of the room, standing beside a massive marble pillar, was Dominic Vance.
He looked immaculate in his charcoal tuxedo, his arm wrapped possessively around Vanessa Quinn. Vanessa wore a plunging, sequins-drenched silver gown that screamed for attention, laughing loudly at something Dominic whispered into her ear. They looked like the picture of high-society success—a power couple stepping over the ashes of the old world to claim their throne.
“Look at them,” Vanessa purred softly, her hand resting on Dominic’s chest. “Everyone is watching us, Dom. I think half the board thinks you announced our engagement tonight instead of just... getting rid of her.”
Dominic took a sip of his scotch, a self-satisfied smirk playing on his lips.
“Evelyn was holding me back, Vanessa,” Dominic said, his voice dripping with condescension. “Some women are made for the penthouse, and some women are made to be left behind. By tomorrow morning, she’ll be out of the city, and we can finally start our real life.”
“You’re so ruthless,” Vanessa giggled, leaning in closer.
“That’s why you love me,” Dominic replied smoothly.
Suddenly, the string quartet on the balcony stopped playing mid-note.
A heavy, suffocating silence swept across the front entrance of the ballroom. Conversations died down instantly. Heads turned in unison toward the grand double doors, where the majordomo raised his golden staff and struck the marble floor twice.
“Presenting,” the majordomo’s voice echoed through the soaring acoustics of the hall, “His Excellency Richard Mercer, accompanied by Mrs. Evelyn Sterling-Vale.”
Dominic’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp, explosive crash that echoed through the silent room.

The champagne pooled around his polished shoes, but he didn't even notice. His eyes bulged in absolute, unadulterated horror as the heavy doors swung wide open.
There, standing at the summit of the grand staircase under the glare of a thousand crystal lights, was me.
