Chapter 6 - The Breaking PointEvelyn handed the grocery bag to Leo, whispering something soft to him before walking slowly across the cobblestone street toward the two men standing on the townhouse porch.

Her expression was a mask of cold, controlled fury.
“Adrian,” Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the damp afternoon air like a razor. “Inside. Now.”
Adrian raised an eyebrow, exchanging a brief, knowing glance with Julian before turning and walking into the townhouse foyer, leaving the door open behind him. Evelyn followed him inside, slamming the heavy oak door shut with a resounding thud that echoed off the high ceilings.
Julian remained standing outside on the sidewalk, humiliated and furious, but too stunned to follow.
Inside the parlor, Adrian leaned casually against a marble fireplace mantel, watching Evelyn pace back and forth across the Persian rug.
“Are you out of your absolute mind?!” Evelyn hissed, turning on him with blazing eyes. “Attacking Julian on the street? Buying out his firm’s contracts? What are you trying to do, start a public corporate war right outside my front door where my children can see it?!”
“I didn't attack him, Ev. He grabbed me first,” Adrian replied calmly, though his dark eyes softened the moment they locked onto her face. “And as for his firm—he’s playing in the big leagues now. If he can’t handle a hostile financial maneuver, maybe he shouldn't be running a private equity fund.”
“This isn't about business, and you know it!” Evelyn shouted, her voice finally breaking, the fierce armor cracking to reveal the raw, exhausted pain underneath. “You’re terrorizing us, Adrian! You’re hovering over our lives like a dark cloud, and every time I look out my kitchen window, I see your face staring back at me across the street!”
Adrian pushed away from the mantelpiece. He closed the distance between them slowly, deliberately, stopping just a foot away from her.
“Because you stole my children from me, Evelyn,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a low, agonizing whisper that carried more weight than any shout.
Evelyn flinched as if she had been struck. “I didn't steal them! I protected them from you! You were a ghost when we were married, Adrian! You were married to your mafia syndicate, your power, your money! I left so my babies wouldn't grow up waiting for a father who never came home!”
“Then look at me now,” Adrian pleaded, reaching out to gently catch her trembling hand. For the first time, Evelyn didn't pull away. She let him hold her fingers, even as tears finally spilled over her lower lashes. “I walked away from the Chicago syndicate six months ago, Ev. I handed operational control over to my captains. I stepped down.”
Evelyn blinked, staring up at him in shock. “You... you stepped down?”
“The Moretti family still holds the assets, but I don't run the streets anymore,” Adrian confessed softly, his thumb gently brushing away a tear from her cheek. “When Marcus showed me that photograph by the Charles River, something inside me broke. I realized that while I was busy building an empire of glass and blood, I had lost the only thing that ever mattered.”
Evelyn stared into his eyes, searching for any sign of the old arrogance, the old indifference that had destroyed their marriage three years ago. All she found was a profound, aching vulnerability.
“It’s too late, Adrian,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “Julian is a good father. He loves them. He’s been there for every first step, every fever, every bedtime story. You can't just parachute back into our lives and expect us to make room for you.”
“I don't want to replace Julian,” Adrian said earnestly. “If he’s been a good father to my son and daughter, I owe him a debt I can never repay. But I am their biological father, Evelyn. And I refuse to be a stranger watching my children grow up from across the street.”
Before Evelyn could answer, the front door of the townhouse suddenly swung open.
Marcus rushed into the entryway, looking pale and breathless, holding his phone out in front of him.
“Boss!” Marcus gasped, cutting off whatever words Evelyn was about to say. “We have a Code Red.”

Adrian’s demeanor shifted in a microsecond—the soft, vulnerable husband vanishing instantly, replaced by the ruthless syndicate boss. “What is it?”
“Your mother,” Marcus said grimly. “Victoria Moretti just landed a private jet at Logan International Airport. She found out about the twins, Boss. And she’s heading straight for Beacon Hill right now.”
