Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost BerthsBy 2:00 AM the following morning, the upper penthouse of the Vance Building in downtown Atlanta—a secure property my father had secretly placed under an independent trust—was fully operational as a high-security tactical headquarters.

Outside the private elevator banks, eight elite guards from Colton Tactical Security guarded every hallway. Inside, Margaret Whitmore was safely resting in a private guest suite under the care of a top medical team, her legal separation papers already drafted.

I sat at the head of a twenty-foot glass conference table, wearing a crisp dark grey pantsuit, drinking a cup of hot black tea.

Across from me sat Bridget Colton, managing partner of Colton & Vance International and my father’s former lead legal strategist, alongside two federal forensic accounting experts.

Bridget opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers flat onto the table toward me:

THE SAVANNAH MARITIME FRAUD: Proof that Richard Whitmore systematically forged Arthur Vance's signature over five years to divert $210 million in commercial dock revenues into shell accounts in the Cayman Islands.

THE HOMICIDE DOSSIER: Forensic mechanical reports from the 2021 car crash proving my father's brake lines had been deliberately severed using an industrial hydraulic cutter at a private garage owned by Whitmore Holdings.

THE SOVEREIGN TRUST DEEDS: Original federal titles confirming Emily Vance as sole 100% controlling trustee of the Vance-Bickford Maritime Trust.

My hands tightened around my teacup until my knuckles turned white.

"They murdered him, Bridget," I said, my voice carrying a quiet, terrifying weight that made the accountants look up. "They cut his brakes, killed him on the highway, and spent five years planning to marry me so I wouldn't audit the books."

"Yes, Emily," Bridget Colton confirmed, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional fury. "And because Nathan slapped you and you defended yourself at the reception, the hospital record of his broken fingers created an official police paper trail that invalidates any emergency spousal proxy claim he tries to file."

"Where is Nathan tonight, Marcus?" I asked, turning to Marcus Vance, my chief of security.

"He's at the Piedmont Country Club, ma'am," Marcus reported with a grim smile. "Richard and Nathan are hosting an emergency closed-door meeting with twenty senior shareholders from Whitmore Holdings, trying to force through a fraudulent asset transfer before the morning stock market opening."

I stood up from the glass table, buttoning my jacket, my hazel eyes burning with an unshakeable, diamond-hard resolve.

"Order the cars, Marcus," I commanded smoothly. "It's time to crash my husband's party."
