Chapter 2 - Sanctuary and StrategyBy the time Audrey arrived at her sister Paige’s house, Paige was already standing on the porch holding a large umbrella, her face etched with fierce protection. She rushed to the passenger side, shielding Audrey and the baby as they hurried inside the warm, brightly lit hallway.

"I still can't believe he actually did it," Paige muttered, wrapping a thick, dry blanket around Audrey’s shoulders while gently taking Maya to check her diaper and soothe her. "Locking out a woman three days postpartum? That crosses the line from garden-variety narcissism straight into sociopathy."

"He thought he was untouchable," Audrey said, her voice steady as she set her car keys on the entryway table. "His mother has been whispering in his ear for months that a real man controls the household assets. Garret figured that by changing the code while I was exhausted with the baby, he’d force me to break down and beg him for access when he got back from Miami."

"Well, he’s about to get a very expensive education," Paige said, handing Maya back before pacing the floor. "What’s Natalie saying?"

"The title is clean, the mortgage was cleared last spring, and the prenuptial agreement protects every square inch of Redwood Crest as my sole pre-marital property," Audrey replied, pulling her phone out to call her lawyer. "By the time Garret touches down in Miami, the house won't even be his to lock us out of anymore."
