Chapter 7 - The New HorizonSix months later.

The Chicago autumn had transformed the city into a brilliant tapestry of amber, gold, and crisp morning frost.

I stood on the wide, glass-enclosed balcony of my penthouse estate overlooking the harbor. The shipping cranes at Slip 4 were moving rhythmically, operating at peak efficiency under clean, legal, and highly profitable management.

Behind me, the sound of soft footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor, followed by the familiar, comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee.

Khloe stepped out onto the balcony, wrapped in a thick cashmere shawl—the exact same blanket she had slept under the night everything changed. She handed me a ceramic mug, her fingers brushing mine with a familiar, effortless warmth.

“The quarterly audit reports just came in from the regional accountants,” Khloe said, smiling as she looked out over the sparkling lake. “We’re officially operating in the black. No dummy accounts, no hidden liabilities, and not a single federal auditor in sight.”

I took a sip of the coffee, wrapping my free arm around her waist and pulling her gently against my side. She leaned into me, resting her head comfortably against my shoulder.

“I told you,” I murmured, kissing the top of her head, “you’re exceptionally good at balancing books.”

“Only when I have the right partner to keep me from falling asleep on the job,” she teased, turning slightly in my embrace to look up at me.

The past felt like a lifetime ago—the blood, the threats, the sleepless nights, and the desperate fear that had driven her into my bedroom in the middle of a freezing rainstorm. All of it had burned away, leaving behind something solid, unshakable, and real.

Down below, the city of Chicago stretched out endlessly beneath the bright midday sun. The shadows were gone, the ledgers were clean, and for the first time in my life, the future belonged entirely to us.
