Chapter 4 - The 7:00 A.M. TrapThe grand conference room on the top floor of City Hall was freezing, smelling faintly of stale upholstery and political desperation.

City council members, urban development executives, and regional logistics heads sat around the massive mahogany table. At the far end sat Marcus Vance, looking entirely too smug in his custom charcoal suit, flanked by Paulie, who was sweating profusely despite the chill in the room.

I walked through the double doors with my posture immaculate, wearing a tailored black overcoat.

And walking right beside me, holding a sleek leather briefcase containing our verified financial ledgers, was Khloe Evans. She wore a sharp charcoal blazer over her blouse, her hair tied back into a sleek ponytail. The timid, background employee was completely gone; in her place stood a razor-sharp corporate strategist.

Paulie’s jaw dropped so hard it nearly hit the table. He stared at Khloe as if he had just seen a ghost walk out of a tomb.

“V-Vincent,” Paulie stammered, half-rising from his chair. “What is she... why is she here? I thought she was home sick!”

“Good morning, Paulie,” I said smoothly, taking my seat at the center of the table directly across from Marcus Vance. I gestured for Khloe to sit beside me. “It turns out my secretary had a very productive night. She found some fascinating discrepancies in our harbor-development filings that I think everyone here needs to see.”

Marcus Vance’s smug smile faltered. He shot a venomous glare at Paulie, who looked ready to pass out right then and there.

“Mr. Costa,” the head of the city council committee intervened, adjusting his glasses. “We are here to vote on the harbor-development zoning permits. If there are extraneous legal disputes, they should be settled outside this chamber.”

“Oh, this isn't a dispute, councilman,” I replied, locking eyes with Marcus. “This is a confession.”

Khloe calmly opened her briefcase, pulled out three identical copies of the forensic audit she had compiled overnight, and slid them across the polished wood toward the committee members, Paulie, and Marcus.

“According to the wire transfers routed through Vanguard Logistics,” Khloe’s voice rang out clear and resonant across the silent room, “ten thousand dollars was funneled into Paulie’s personal offshore account yesterday afternoon to forge my signature on the secondary shipping manifests. Furthermore, Mr. Vance’s corporation holds controlling shares in the shell company used to finance the operation.”

Chaos erupted instantly.

Council members began whispering loudly, leaning over to inspect the undeniable paper trail of bank routing numbers and encrypted IP logs that Khloe had painstakingly tracked down.

Paulie slammed his hands on the table, standing up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the carpet. “She’s lying! It’s forged! Vincent, you can’t trust her—!”

“Sit down, Paulie,” I commanded, my voice dropping into a lethal, glacial register that instantly silenced the entire room.

I slowly stood up, placing both hands flat on the table, leaning forward like a predator cornering its prey.
