Chapter 1 - The Weight of WhispersThe silence inside my bedroom was absolute, save for the steady, relentless drumbeat of freezing rain battering the reinforced glass windowpanes. I sat motionless in the leather chair, staring across the dim expanse of the room toward the edge of my oversized mattress. Underneath the heavy cashmere blanket, Khloe Evans—my quiet, meticulously terrified secretary—shifted restlessly.

Her whisper had hung in the damp air like a spectral echo. “Vincent... don’t sign the second manifest... they’re watching the harbor slips.”
Those were not guesses.
My breath hitched, every instinct honed from a decade of navigating the brutal underbelly of Costa Logistics instantly flaring to life. How did a twenty-six-year-old art history graduate, who spent her days politely organizing shipping schedules and hiding her terror behind cheap glasses and pastel blouses, know about the secondary manifest? The dock operations at Slip 4 were compartmentalized behind layers of encryption and cash-only handshakes. Even my most trusted lieutenants, like Paulie, didn't talk about the secondary paperwork outside the boardroom.
I stood up silently, my joints aching from thirty-six hours of continuous movement, and crossed the Persian rug. The ambient amber light from the hallway illuminated Khloe’s face. Even in sleep, her brow was furrowed, tight with a chronic stress that went far beyond the normal boundaries of corporate burnout.
I reached down, intending to gently shake her awake and demand answers. But as my fingers hovered near her shoulder, I saw a thin red scratch running down the back of her hand, and the distinct, dark bruise shadowing her left wrist.
My jaw tightened. That wasn't an office injury.
I walked back to my mahogany desk where the manila folder containing the zoning permits lay. Beneath it, half-hidden by a legal pad, was a crumpled piece of loose-leaf notebook paper. I pulled it out and unfolded it under the desk lamp.
It was a handwritten tally sheet. Names, dates, and amounts matching the exact ten thousand dollars my lieutenant had supposedly stolen earlier that week—along with notes written in Khloe’s precise cursive detailing unauthorized ledger overrides originating from an internal terminal.
She hadn’t just stumbled into my private room by accident because she was exhausted.

She had been tracking the leak inside my own company.
And tonight, she had walked straight into the lion’s den to hand me the evidence before the executioners caught up to her.
