Chapter 4 - The Rat WithinThe revelation hit the room like a physical blow.

Federal agents didn't stumble onto Costa Logistics by coincidence. A leak from the inside had provided them with the blueprints, the routing slips, and the exact timestamp of our financial audits.
“Who?” I demanded, standing up so abruptly my chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. “Who in my inner circle is talking to the DOJ?”
Khloe reached into her blazer pocket and pulled out a folded printout, sliding it across the desk toward me. I picked it up. It was a digital wire transfer receipt dated three days ago, routed through an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
The recipient name was redacted, but the authorization signature at the bottom belonged to none other than Marcus Vance—my chief legal counsel and the man who had supposedly managed my corporate defense strategy for a decade.
“Marcus?” Paulie growled, stepping forward in disbelief. “Marcus is a family man! He’s been with us since the old days!”
“Marcus has been embezzling from the legal defense fund to cover his gambling debts in Atlantic City,” Khloe stated calmly, pulling out a second piece of paper containing itemized bank statements. “I found the discrepancies while reconciling the quarterly tax withholdings last Tuesday. He traded our operational data to the federal prosecutor in exchange for immunity.”
I looked down at the financial documents in my hand, then up at Khloe. She hadn't just accidentally stumbled into my operations; she had been acting as my silent, unofficial internal auditor, quietly fixing leaks, patching financial holes, and protecting the company from collapsing under the weight of its own corruption—all while earning a modest secretarial salary.
“You’ve been tracking Marcus?” I asked, a strange, inexplicable mixture of respect and disbelief rising in my chest.
“Someone had to,” she muttered, looking away, a faint blush touching her cheeks. “If you went to prison, who was going to sign my health insurance paperwork?”
A low chuckle escaped my lips, breaking the heavy tension in the room. Paulie looked back and forth between us as if we had both lost our minds.
“Boss, what are we going to do?” Paulie asked urgently. “The feds are on their way here with a search warrant. If they walk into this office and find Marcus’s wire records alongside our primary shipping books, we’re finished.”
“They aren't going to find anything,” I said coldly, walking over to the floor safe beneath my desk. I spun the dial, pulled open the heavy steel door, and lifted out the backup ledger Khloe had mentioned in her sleep.
I handed the book directly to her.
Khloe blinked, clutching the leather-bound ledger against her chest as if it were a fragile artifact. “Mr. Costa… what is this?”
“It’s your new promotion, Khloe,” I said, walking back to stand directly in front of her. “Effective immediately, you are no longer my secretary. You are my Chief Financial Officer. And your first official task is to ensure that every incriminating document Marcus Vance touched is thoroughly and permanently erased before the federal agents step foot inside this estate.”
Her eyes widened in shock. “You’re trusting me? After everything I just admitted?”

“You didn't turn me into the feds when you had the chance,” I replied, my voice dropping into a low, intense register. “Instead, you spent three years keeping my books clean. That loyalty is worth more than a dozen capos.”
Before Khloe could reply, the heavy iron gates at the front entrance of the estate echoed with the unmistakable sound of federal vehicles pulling up the driveway.
