Chapter 5 - The Audit of Sterling RidgeBy sunrise, the frantic energy of the raid had settled into a quiet, heavy stillness across Sterling Ridge Estate. The crystal chandeliers were turned off, the three hundred wedding guests long since evacuated or questioned by federal investigators, and the sprawling white marble terrace was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.

Inside the grand master study—a room where Eleanor used to sit behind a massive mahogany desk dictating financial ruin to unsuspecting victims—I sat in a comfortable armchair, wrapped in a warm wool blanket, cradling my newborn daughter.
Agent Diana Cruz walked in holding a thick stack of printed forensic reports, a cup of hot black coffee in her other hand, which she extended toward me.
“How are you holding up, Agent Miller?” Diana asked with a warm, respectful smile, using my professional title for the first time since the operation began.
“Exhausted, but alive,” I replied, taking the coffee and breathing in the steam. I looked down at my baby girl, who was sleeping peacefully against my chest, completely unaware of the historical storm her arrival had caused. “And officially retired from undercover domestic life.”
“You can say that again,” Diana chuckled, pulling up a chair across from me. She dropped the heavy file onto the mahogany desk with a satisfying thud. “The preliminary sweep of the estate’s offshore accounts just cleared. Every single shell company, forged payroll entry, and fake vendor account you flagged in your nine-month audit report is fully verified. We have the digital signatures. Julian signed off on the last major transfer forty-eight hours ago.”
“He was always arrogant enough to think no one would look past the surface,” I murmured, feeling a faint pang of residual sorrow, quickly replaced by steady resolve. “He thought my government salary meant I was incompetent.”
“Well, his arrogance is going to buy him a minimum of fifteen years in a federal penitentiary,” Diana said bluntly, sipping her coffee. “And Eleanor and Seraphina’s assets are being seized by the state to reimburse the victims of their fraud. The vineyard goes into receivership by noon today.”
A soft knock sounded at the open study door. A young, compassionate state trooper stepped inside, nodding respectfully.
“Agent Cruz, the transport vehicle for the Sterling family is ready. Also, the neonatal specialist cleared Mrs. Miller and the baby for transfer to St. Jude’s Hospital whenever you’re ready.”
“Thank you, Officer. We’ll be down in ten minutes,” Diana replied.
The trooper saluted and stepped back out.

I looked around the grand, empty room one last time. The gold-plated frames, the expensive art, the symbols of an empire built on deception—it was all dust in the wind. But as I looked down at the tiny, breathing miracle resting in my arms, I knew that true wealth wasn't measured in marble floors, designer dresses, or stolen millions.
It was measured in truth, strength, and a fresh start.
