Chapter 1 - The Descent into the East WingThe cold white marble of the east bridal suite bathroom felt like a slab of ice against my trembling knees. Liquid pooled beneath me

Outside, the muffled, heavy thumping of the bass from the reception pavilion continued to vibrate through the floorboards. To the three hundred elite guests dining on imported caviar and vintage champagne under the crystal chandeliers, the night was pristine. To Eleanor and Julian, my pain was nothing more than an inconvenient smudge on an otherwise flawless canvas.

I clutched my stomach, gasping for breath as a wave of agony crested and broke over me. My phone buzzed tightly against my palm. Special Agent Diana Cruz’s words still echoed in the small, tiled enclosure: “Stay conscious. We’re coming for all of you.”

It wasn't just a promise of rescue; it was a death sentence for the Sterling family empire.

For nine months, while they treated me like an unrefined intruder in their dynasty of wealth and privilege, I had been building a legal cage around them. As a forensic auditor for the state attorney general’s organized fraud unit, my eyes didn't see a sprawling vineyard, rolling hills of lush grapes, or priceless art collections when I looked at Sterling Ridge Estate. I saw ledger discrepancies, hidden offshore accounts, and a multi-million-dollar money-laundering scheme funneled through dead relatives' identities.

My husband, Julian—the man whose shadow had paused just moments ago beneath the heavy oak door—had looked down at me with cold irritation. “Just ten minutes, Audrey. Don’t make this worse.”

Those ten minutes were ticking away. But the clock wasn't just counting down to the cutting of the wedding cake; it was counting down to the total collapse of everything they had built on fraud and deceit.

Footsteps echoed sharply down the outer corridor. Not the heavy, rhythmic tread of paramedics, but the sharp, clicking heels of Eleanor.

“Audrey?” her voice pierced through the wood, venomous and sharp. “Are you done making a spectacle of yourself? The cake cutting is in three minutes. Seraphina wants the family portrait taken immediately afterward, and your absence is irritating the photographer.”

I gritted my teeth, biting down on my lower lip until I tasted blood, refusing to give her the satisfaction of a whimper. I pulled myself up slightly, leaning my back against the sleek, modern vanity, and spoke through the gap beneath the door.

“My water broke, Eleanor,” I whispered back, my voice shaking with a mix of fury and intense pain. “If you don’t open this door right now, and if an ambulance isn’t called within two minutes, the consequences won't just ruin Seraphina’s photos. They will destroy every single asset this family owns.”

Silence fell heavily on the other side. Then, a sharp, nervous laugh.

“Still playing the victim, aren't you?” Eleanor snapped, her voice tightening. “You always did have an overactive imagination, the little accountant. Stay in there and reflect on your place. Julian will let you out when the cameras are turned off.”

Her heels clicked away, fading into the distance. But she didn't know what I knew. She didn't know that Special Agent Diana Cruz and a tactical unit of federal and state investigators were already tearing down the private gravel road leading to Sterling Ridge Estate, bypassing the valet with drawn badges and federal warrants.
