Chapter 3 - The Vault of LiesJulian’s face drained of what little color it had left. He glanced from Diana’s badge to the federal warrant clutched in her hand, his throat working as he tried to swallow.

“I don't know what you're talking about,” Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, slipping into the practiced, arrogant defense mechanism of a man who had never faced a consequence in his life. “My family is a pillar of this community. You can’t just storm into a private family event—show me a warrant! This is harassment!”

“It’s not harassment, Julian. It’s an indictment,” Diana replied smoothly. She turned her head slightly, signaling two state investigators who immediately stepped up behind Julian, their hands resting heavy on their utility belts. “Julian Sterling, you are under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit corporate embezzlement.”

A collective gasp echoed from the doorway. Seraphina dropped her champagne flute; it shattered on the marble floor with a sharp, crystalline explosion, the liquid splashing across her designer shoes.

“Arrested? Are you insane?” Eleanor shrieked, pushing past the troopers with claws bared. She pointed a trembling, diamond-ringed finger at Diana’s chest. “Do you know who we are? We own half the county! We donate millions to the governor’s re-election campaign! You can’t touch us!”

“Mrs. Sterling, I suggest you step back before you add obstruction of justice and intimidation of a federal officer to your own upcoming charges,” Diana warned without blinking.

On the floor, the lead paramedic’s voice cut through the shouting. “Audrey, I need you to push! Breathe in deep, and push on my count—one, two, three!”

A searing wave of pain tore through me, eclipsing the chaos around us. I squeezed my eyes shut, gripping Diana’s hand so hard my nails dug into her skin. I pushed with every ounce of strength left in my body, channeling every drop of humiliation, betrayal, and exhaustion into a single, roaring effort.

“That’s it! Head is crowning! You’re doing great, mom!” the paramedic encouraged, his hands steady and professional amidst the madness.

Julian took a desperate step forward toward the medical team, completely ignoring the federal agents. “Audrey, stop this! Tell them to leave! What are you doing? Why are you doing this to us?”

I opened my eyes, panting heavily, sweat plastering my blonde hair to my forehead. I looked up at the man I had loved, trusted, and protected for years—the man who had left me to suffer alone in a locked bathroom just minutes ago to protect his family’s vanity.

“You signed every single transfer, Julian,” I whispered, my voice cutting through the room like a razor. “Every shell company. Every forged payroll account for dead relatives. You thought because I wore plain clothes and carried a briefcase, I was just your quiet little accountant wife who wouldn't look too closely at the numbers.”

Julian staggered backward as if he had been physically struck. His mouth opened, but no words came out. His eyes darted to the federal agents, then to his mother, whose face had turned the color of ash.

“You… you knew?” Julian choked out.

“I knew before you even bought this vineyard,” I panted, another contraction gripping me. “And now, your empire is burning down to the ground.”
