Chapter 5 - The Lobby Confrontation

The grand marble lobby of the St. Jude Hotel was a scene of utter chaos. The wedding guests had fled, leaving behind scattered corsages, crushed champagne flutes, and trampled rose petals.

In the center of the rotunda stood Richard Vance, his tuxedo jacket rumpled, his hair disheveled, flanked by two local police officers and a sweating local news reporter holding a live camera rig.

When the private elevator doors chimed and descended from the penthouse, the lobby went dead silent.

Meredith stepped out first, walking with the unhurried grace of an empress descending from a throne. Daniel followed half a step behind, his massive frame radiating an aura of lethal calm that made the two police officers instinctively step back.

“There she is!” Richard shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Meredith while the camera operator swung the lens toward her face. “That’s her! That’s my daughter! She’s part of some criminal conspiracy! She and this—this corporate thug stole my business, froze my bank accounts, and ruined my youngest daughter’s wedding day!”

The reporter shoved a microphone toward Meredith’s face. “Ms. Vance—or Mrs. Reyes—allegations of corporate extortion are very serious. Do you have any comment on your father’s claims that you orchestrated a hostile takeover of Vance Enterprises?”

Meredith stopped two feet away from her father. She looked at him—really looked at him—not as a frightened, browbeaten daughter, but as a creditor looking at a bankrupt debtor.

“It’s not a hostile takeover, Dad,” Meredith said clearly into the reporter’s microphone. “It’s a repossession.”

“You ungrateful little monster!” Richard roared, lunging forward, but Daniel moved faster than a striking cobra.

In a fraction of a second, Daniel caught Richard by the lapels of his rumpled tuxedo, lifting him two inches off the marble floor with one hand while pinning his arms to his sides. The police officers immediately reached for their holsters, but stopped dead in their tracks when Daniel flashed a high-level federal security clearance badge tucked inside his breast pocket—an authorization signed directly by the Department of Justice’s financial crimes division.

“Officer,” Daniel said, his voice cold enough to freeze liquid nitrogen. “This man is currently under federal investigation for interstate wire fraud, tax evasion, and grand larceny involving over twelve million dollars embezzled from a protected family trust. If he takes another step toward my wife, I will have you arrested for obstruction of justice.”

The lead officer blinked, stared at the badge, took two steps back, and dropped his hand from his holster. “Understood, Mr. Reyes. We’re... we’re just here to keep the peace.”

Richard’s face turned the color of spoiled milk. His legs went limp, and if Daniel hadn't held him up by his lapels, the great patriarch of the Vance family would have collapsed onto the lobby floor.

“Please,” Richard whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, wheezing whine. “Meredith... please. I’m your father. We’re family. You can’t do this to us. Your mother... Allison... we’ll starve.”

Meredith looked down at the man who had shoved her into a fountain just three hours ago, the man who had treated her entire existence as an inconvenience.

“For thirty-two years, Dad, you reminded me every single day that I wasn't enough,” Meredith said quietly. “You told me I was abrasive, unlovable, and pathetic. You were right about one thing: I’m not pathetic anymore.”

Daniel released his grip, letting Richard stumble backward onto his hands and knees among the crushed rose petals of Allison’s wedding.

“Get out of my hotel,” Daniel said coldly.
