Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Reyes Global

The private VIP lounge on the penthouse floor of the St. Jude Hotel was bathed in the amber glow of the Manhattan skyline outside. Downstairs, the wedding reception had dissolved into an absolute riot of screaming guests, panicking caterers, and flashing police lights as credit card processors rejected final payments for the venue.
Meredith sat by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, a crystal glass of sparkling water in her hand. The black silk dress still fit like a glove, but the tension that had gripped her shoulders for thirty-two years was finally beginning to uncoil.
Daniel walked over from the private bar, setting a small porcelain cup of chamomile tea down on the marble table before her. He pulled up a chair, sitting close enough that his knee brushed hers.
“The bailiffs have secured the Vance primary residence in Westchester,” Daniel said quietly, his voice gentle. “Your mother tried to claim diplomatic immunity through her country club membership. It didn’t work.”
Meredith let out a short, breathy laugh that held no humor, only exhaustion. “You didn't have to pull the debt on Sterling Logistics, Daniel. I could have handled them on my own terms.”
“I didn't do it for you, darling. I did it for me,” Daniel said, taking her hand and pressing his thumb gently against her knuckles. “For three years, I’ve had to watch the woman I love—the brilliant, terrifyingly competent woman who built her own cybersecurity firm from a dorm room while the rest of the world ignored her—pretend to be a doormat just so she could gather enough financial evidence to bury her family legally.”
Meredith looked down at their joined hands. Three years ago, when she was twenty-nine, she had met Daniel at a closed-door tech summit where she was pitching encryption software to sovereign wealth funds. He had pursued her with the relentless intensity of a general laying siege to a fortress. When she finally confessed her family’s psychological and financial abuse—how they drained her grandmother’s inheritance and kept her tethered through guilt—Daniel hadn't pitied her.
Instead, he had smiled a terrifying, predatory smile and said, “Let’s play a long game. Let them dig their own graves, and we’ll hand them the shovels.”
“They really thought they were untouchable,” Meredith whispered. “Even when I fell into that fountain... Dad stood there smiling. He honestly believed he was the king of the world.”
“Tyrants always believe their walls are made of stone right up until the battering ram hits the gate,” Daniel replied. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a thick, leather-bound portfolio. “Speaking of gates... your father’s primary commercial real estate portfolio went into receivership ten minutes ago. Guess who just bought the entire block for pennies on the dollar through an anonymous holding shell?”
Meredith raised an eyebrow. “Let me guess. Reyes Global?”
“Actually, no,” Daniel grinned, his stormy eyes flashing with amusement. “I registered the holding company under a very specific name. The Lily and Noah Foundation.”
Meredith’s breath hitched. Lily and Noah were the names of the children’s wing at the Manhattan pediatric hospital her grandmother had originally funded—the same wing her father had tried to legally dismantle two years ago to build a luxury golf resort.
“You didn't,” she breathed.
“I did,” Daniel said softly. “By Monday morning, your father’s golf resort project will officially be a public children’s hospital ward bearing your grandmother’s name. He won't even be able to park his Mercedes in the lot.”
Before Meredith could reply, the secure comms pad on Daniel’s desk chimed with a priority-one alert. Daniel tapped the screen. A tense-faced associate appeared in the high-definition video feed.

“Mr. Reyes,” the associate said quickly. “Richard Vance is downstairs in the hotel lobby with local law enforcement and a local reporter. He’s claiming identity theft, corporate extortion, and harassment. He’s demanding a face-to-face meeting with you and Mrs. Reyes immediately.”
Daniel glanced at Meredith, a dark, dangerous amusement in his eyes. “Shall we invite the king to his own execution?”
