Chapter 6 - The Justice of the DeadStanding in the doorway, flanked by two armed private security guards in black tactical gear, was Dr. Julian Vance. His face was twisted into an expression of cold, venomous fury.

"Well, well, well," Dr. Vance sneered, stepping into the room and rolling up his white shirtsleeves. "It seems grief makes people do remarkably foolish things, Mrs. Miller. Hand over that thumb drive, and perhaps we can negotiate a quiet arrangement—just like your husband tried to do."

The two security guards moved forward, blocking the only exit out of the archive room.

I gripped the thumb drive tightly in my right coat pocket, my heart pounding like a war drum. I refused to cower. I stood up straight from the desk, looking directly into the eyes of the man who had murdered my husband.

"You didn't beat Liam, Dr. Vance," I said, my voice ringing with a cold, steady power that surprised even myself. "You just didn't realize he was smarter than you."

Dr. Vance’s smile vanished. He nodded to the guards. "Take it from her pocket. Use whatever force is necessary."

The larger of the two guards stepped forward, reaching out a heavy hand toward my coat.

Before his fingers could touch me, the harsh fluorescent lights overhead flickered, buzzed violently, and suddenly died, plunging the archive room into sudden, murky darkness illuminated only by the green glow of the emergency exit signs.

A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the hallway outside, followed by shouting and the sound of heavy boots running down the corridor.

"What the hell is going on out there?" Dr. Vance snapped, turning toward the doorway.

Before the guards could react, a flashbang grenade came rolling across the concrete floor from the hallway, detonating with a blinding flash of white light and a deafening, concussion-wave pop that sent the guards stumbling backward, clutching their ears in agony.

Through the thick white smoke pouring into the room strode three heavily armed federal marshals in full tactical gear, their rifles raised and locked directly onto Dr. Vance’s chest.

Leading them was Detective Marcus Vance (no relation to the doctor) alongside Dr. Marcus Barrett, who looked breathless and shaken, holding a secure police radio console.

"Dr. Julian Vance, you are under federal arrest for wire fraud, medical malpractice, conspiracy, and illegal organ trafficking," Detective Vance shouted, stepping forward and slamming steel handcuffs onto the doctor's wrists with brutal efficiency.

Dr. Vance thrashed wildly, his face turning purple with rage. "You can't do this! I am the chief of surgery! This is an illegal raid! I demand my attorney!"

"Your attorney won't help you, Julian," Dr. Barrett stepped forward, his voice trembling with long-suppressed fury. "Not after federal cyber-crimes units decrypted the master audio files your widow just uploaded to the Department of Health and Human Services database three minutes ago."

Dr. Vance froze, his eyes widening in stark, unadulterated terror as he looked back at me standing beside the oak desk.

"It's over, Doctor," I whispered, pulling the thumb drive out of my pocket and holding it up in the dim emergency light. "Liam’s final wish wasn't just to save a stranger’s life. It was to make sure you spend the rest of yours behind bars."

As the federal marshals dragged a kicking and screaming Dr. Vance out of the sub-basement vault, I let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling a suffocating weight lift off my shoulders for the first time since my husband drew his last breath.
