Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Sub-BasementPanic seized my chest with icy claws. I spun around, scanning the cramped archive room for a hiding place. There were no closets, no curtains, no secondary exits—only the ventilation shaft above the filing cabinets and the narrow space beneath the heavy oak desk.

The footsteps grew closer, stopping just outside the reinforced steel door.
Click.
A key slid into the exterior lock.
Without thinking, I dove behind the oak desk, curling my body into a tight ball against the cold concrete floor just as the heavy door swung open with a loud groan of protesting hinges.
The sharp click of dress shoes echoed across the room. A tall, immaculate silhouette stepped inside, casting a long, distorted shadow across the filing cabinets.
Even from my hiding place, I recognized the distinctive scent of expensive sandalwood cologne and medical-grade antiseptic.
Dr. Julian Vance.
"Who's there?" Dr. Vance’s voice cut through the silence, cold, sharp, and dripping with controlled menace. "I know someone was logged into the service elevator terminal on Level B2. Show yourself before I call security and have you dragged out in handcuffs."
Silence hung heavy in the room. I held my breath, pressing my hand tightly over my mouth to muffle the sound of my own racing pulse. Every heartbeat felt like a hammer blow against my ribs.
I heard the rustling of papers on the desk above me.
"Curious," Dr. Vance muttered to himself, his footsteps pacing back and forth across the linoleum. "The Project Lazarus file has been disturbed. The locking mechanism was engaged, but the tumblers were shifted."
A pause. Then, the terrifying sound of heavy leather shoes stepping around the side of the desk.
My eyes squeezed shut. I prayed to a God I hadn't spoken to since Liam drew his last breath. Please don't let him look down. Please protect my baby.
Suddenly, Dr. Vance’s cell phone rang, breaking the heavy tension with a loud, jarring pop song ringtone.
He stopped just two feet from where I lay huddled on the floor. I could see the polished tips of his Italian leather shoes inches from my face.
"Vance," he answered harshly into the phone, turning away from the desk and pacing toward the door. "Yes, Minister. The shipment from the Miller estate is fully processed. The liver and kidneys were harvested within standard viability windows and airlifted to Zurich three hours ago... No, there are no loose ends. The widow is clueless, grieving in suburban bliss... I'll be upstairs in five minutes."
He hung up the phone with an aggressive swipe of his thumb.
With one final, sweeping glance around the room, Dr. Vance turned on his heel, walked out the door, and pulled it shut behind him.
Click.
The deadbolt turned from the outside.
I was locked inside the sub-basement vault.
I waited three full minutes, listening to the fading echo of his footsteps down the corridor before crawling out from beneath the desk. My hands were shaking so violently I could barely stand. I rushed to the door and jiggled the handle.

Locked tight. There was no interior release mechanism.
I was trapped in the very crypt Liam had led me to uncover.
