Chapter 1 - Turbulence in the DarkThe cabin lights of flight 409 flickered violently as another sudden down-draft slammed the Boeing 777, sending a collective gasp through first class. Overhead bins groaned, and the "Fasten Seatbelt" sign blazed a harsh, warning red. But inside my chest, the turbulence was far worse than anything the New York night sky could throw at us.

I was Luca Moretti. To the tabloids and corporate boardrooms, I was the ruthless real estate titan who bought up half of Manhattan before breakfast and crushed anyone standing in my path. I had spent six years building an impenetrable wall of wealth, paranoia, and isolation. When you control billions, people only look at your shadow. They never see the man underneath.

Or at least, I thought they didn't.

Beside me in seat 4B, six-year-old Lila Walsh squeezed my hand so tightly her tiny knuckles turned white. When the plane shuddered again, she didn't scream or cry. Instead, she looked up at me with those familiar, striking amber-brown eyes—eyes I had spent over two thousand nights staring at in old photographs that I kept locked in my private safe.

Across the aisle, her mother sat paralyzed. Elena.

The name felt like a physical blow against my ribs. Six years ago, Elena Vance had vanished from my life without a single word, leaving behind an empty apartment in Tribeca, a cold note on the kitchen counter, and a silence that nearly drove me insane. I had torn the city apart looking for her. I had hired private investigators, shaken down informants, and bribed officials, all while believing she had simply decided a life with the feared Luca Moretti was too dangerous.

She hadn't just run away. She had hidden my child.

"Luca..." Elena choked out, her voice barely audible over the screaming jet engines. Her face was bloodless, her manicured fingers digging into the armrests. "Please... don't hate me."

Before I could answer, the captain’s voice crackled over the intercom, clipped and tense. “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve encountered severe, unexpected clear-air turbulence. Flight attendants, please remain seated immediately.”

A violent jolt threw loose items flying from the galley. Lila gasped and buried her face against my tailored suit jacket, her small frame trembling. Without thinking, I wrapped my arm securely around her shoulder, pulling her against my chest. Her scent hit me instantly—sweet, clean lavender and rain. It was a scent etched deep into my DNA, a ghost I had chased through every sleepless night in my empty penthouse.

"You're safe," I murmured, my voice vibrating against her ear. It was a promise I hadn't made to anyone in six years, but as I looked down at the curly hair spilling over my collar, I knew I would tear the world apart before letting anything harm her.

Elena leaned forward across the narrow aisle, tears finally breaking free and spilling down her pale cheeks. "I had to, Luca. If I stayed... they would have taken her from me. From us."

"Who?" I demanded, my voice dropping into that dark, dangerous register that normally made grown men tremble in fear. "Who the hell was going to take my child?"

Before Elena could answer, the plane dropped into an air pocket. The stomach-dropping sensation of freefall silenced the cabin entirely, followed immediately by the terrifying crunch of hail striking the fuselage. Masks dropped from the overhead compartments with a sharp hiss.

Panic threatened to overwhelm the first-class cabin, but I kept my eyes locked on Elena and the little girl holding onto my hand. The most feared man in New York was trapped thousands of feet in the air, finally holding everything he had ever lost, while the storm outside raged on like an omen of the reckoning to come.
