Chapter 6 - The Siege

The war didn't wait for morning.
By 3:00 AM, the penthouse was under siege.
I was asleep in Noah’s bed—wrapped in one of his silk shirts that smelled overwhelmingly of his sandalwood cologne—when the distant, terrifying crack of automatic gunfire shattered the silence of the night.
I bolted upright. The penthouse alarms were blaring, a strobe of red emergency lights casting frantic shadows across the minimalist walls.
The bedroom door flew open, and Noah stood there in dark tactical pants and a black combat undershirt, a rifle slung over his shoulder and a Glock in his hand. He looked like a general preparing for the final stand.
“Get up. Now,” he commanded, his voice dead calm, though his eyes were wild with adrenaline.
“What’s happening?” I gasped, throwing off the covers and scrambling out of bed.
“Santoro’s men. They hit the ground floor security team. They’re breaching the private elevator.” Noah grabbed my hand, pulling me toward a hidden panel behind the walk-in closet. “There’s a panic room behind this wall. Get inside and lock it. Do not open it for anyone except me. Do you understand? Anyone.”
“No,” I cried out, grabbing his jacket. “I’m not hiding while you fight them alone! Let me stay with you!”
Noah stopped. He turned around, cupping my face in his hands, his thumbs wiping away the tears streaming down my cheeks. For the first time since I met him, I saw raw, unfiltered vulnerability in the eyes of the most feared man in New York.
“If I don't survive this night, Elena, I need you to know,” he whispered fiercely, pressing his forehead against mine, “you were the best thing that ever happened to my miserable life. Now... go!”
He shoved me gently into the dark, concrete-reinforced panic room and slammed the heavy steel door shut before I could scream. The heavy thud of the automated deadbolts locking into place echoed like a gunshot.
Outside, the chaos exploded.
Muzzle flashes illuminated the edges of the heavy steel door through the tiny ventilation slit. I pressed my back against the cold concrete wall, sliding down to the floor, pulling my knees to my chest. I could hear the shattering of glass, the deafening roar of automatic weapons fire, shouts, bodies crashing against furniture, and the unmistakable, terrifying sounds of hand-to-hand combat right outside the walk-in closet.
Pop-pop-pop.
A grenade or flashbang detonated, rattling the entire building. The lights inside the panic room flickered and died, plunging me into absolute, suffocating darkness.
I screamed Noah’s name, my voice breaking against the concrete walls.
Silence.
A horrifying, dead silence that stretched out for eternity.
Minutes passed—or maybe hours. Time lost all meaning. Every second felt like a knife twisting in my chest. I imagined Noah lying bleeding on the polished concrete floor, surrounded by broken glass and shattered dreams. I imagined myself trapped in this iron cage forever, a monument to a love story that ended before it truly began.
Then, a heavy thud hit the steel panic room door.
Bang. Bang.
“Elena.”
The voice was raspy, exhausted, and bleeding around the edges.
“Noah?!” I scrambled forward, throwing myself against the steel door. “Noah, is that you?!”
“Open the override,” he whispered.
I fumbled in the dark for the digital keypad beside the door, punching in the six-digit code Noah had given me earlier that week.
The heavy steel door hissed, unsealed, and slowly swung outward.
The sight that greeted me broke my heart into a million jagged pieces. Noah was leaning heavily against the doorframe, bleeding from a deep gash across his forehead and a bullet graze along his ribs. His tactical shirt was stained dark with blood—some his, some not. The penthouse behind him looked like a war zone; windows smashed out to the night sky, furniture splintered, and the bodies of several armed intruders slumped unconscious across the floor.
He had won. But he was bleeding out.

“Noah!” I cried out, throwing my arms around his waist, half-supporting his heavy weight as he stumbled into the room.
“I told you...” Noah wheezed, a weak, bloody smile touching his lips as he collapsed onto the edge of the bed, pulling me down with him. “I told you... nobody touches what’s mine.”
