Chapter 5 - The Serpent in the Garden

“Noah, my boy,” Victor Santoro’s voice cut through the romantic haze like a rusty blade. He stepped into our personal space, his sharp, dark eyes flicking from Noah to me with an expression of simulated warmth that didn't reach his dead, reptilian eyes. “I see you finally decided to introduce us to the famous tailor. Exquisite taste, as always. Though bringing fragile things to a war zone... risky business, wouldn't you say?”
Noah didn't flinch. His body went rigid beside me, his arm shifting protectively to slide in front of my waist, placing me half a step behind him.
“Victor,” Noah greeted coldly, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal register. “I thought you were banned from Manhattan after last month’s little misunderstanding on the docks.”
Santoro chuckled, a dry, grating sound. “Banned? By whom? The police? Please, Noah. We both know who runs this city, and it ain't the boys in blue. I just wanted to come pay my respects to the new... acquisition.”
Santoro’s eyes locked onto mine, a slimy, predatory glint in his gaze. “Tell me, my dear, does he treat you well? Because if you ever grow tired of hiding in penthouses and dodging stray bullets in Brooklyn warehouses, my doors are always open.”
My blood ran cold. The implication was unmistakable—a direct threat, wrapped in polite mafia diplomacy.
Before I could speak, Noah moved.
In a flash of pure, terrifying violence, Noah grabbed Santoro by the lapels of his custom Italian tuxedo, slamming him back against a towering marble pillar with enough force to rattle the crystal champagne flutes on a nearby table.
The entire ballroom gasped. The music stuttered to a halt. Fifty high-society guests froze in horror, watching the city’s most dangerous men collide in broad daylight.
“Listen to me very carefully, Victor,” Noah whispered, his voice dangerously low, yet every word echoed off the marble walls. “Look at her again, speak to her again, breathe in her direction again, and I won't just banish you from Manhattan. I’ll feed you to the rats in the East River before the night is over. Do we understand each other?”
Santoro, gasping for air against the pillar, his face pale with sudden, genuine terror, managed a frantic nod.
Noah released him with a disgusted shove, sending the rival boss stumbling backward into the arms of his panicked bodyguards. Without another word, Noah grabbed my hand, turning his back on the horrified crowd, and marched me straight out of the grand ballroom, through the lobby, and into the waiting night air.
We didn't speak as we got into the Maybach. Paulie slammed the doors shut, and the car peeled away from the curb, racing into the dark city streets.
Inside the dimly lit back seat, I sat trembling, my heart hammering against my ribs. Noah sat beside me, his chest heaving, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, breaking the heavy silence.
Noah snapped his head around to look at me, his eyes wide with confusion. “Sorry? What on earth do you have to be sorry for?”
“I caused a scene. I made you lose your temper in front of half the city. Now they know—they know I’m your weakness.”
Noah let out a harsh, broken sigh. He reached out, grabbing my hands and pulling me into his lap before I could protest. He wrapped his arms around me, burying his face in my neck, his breathing ragged against my skin.
“You aren't a weakness, Elena,” he murmured, his voice thick with an emotion that sounded dangerously close to fear. “You’re the only real thing in a world full of ghosts and monsters. I don't care about the room. I don't care about Santoro. The only thing I care about is that he looked at you.”
I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, letting the tears fall freely onto his shoulder.
“I’m not going anywhere, Noah,” I whispered fiercely into his ear. “I’m not scared of them.”
May you like
Noah pulled back just enough to look into my eyes, the streetlights flashing through the tinted windows casting shadows across his face.
“You should be,” he whispered. “Because what comes next... war with Santoro... it’s going to test everything we have.”
