Chapter 3 - The Snake in the BoardroomThe morning sun broke over Manhattan, painting the glass skyscrapers in shades of fiery orange. But inside the high-rise executive suite of Reed Enterprises, the atmosphere was as cold as a morgue.

Julian sat at the head of the long mahogany conference table, clad in a sharp charcoal suit. His eyes were shadowed from lack of sleep, but his presence radiated an imposing authority that kept the eight board members sitting around him entirely quiet.

Standing near the far end of the table was Richard Vance—Chloe’s father, and the Chief Financial Officer of Reed Enterprises. Richard was a man in his late fifties with slicked-back gray hair, expensive gold cufflinks, and a face currently flushed with indignation.

"This is an absolute outrage, Julian!" Richard slammed his fist onto the table, making the glass water pitchers rattle. "You had my daughter arrested like a common criminal! On what grounds? A minor misunderstanding at a garden party?"

Julian didn't flinch. He slowly raised his coffee cup, took a measured sip, and set it down with a soft clink.

"Your daughter attempted to drown my pregnant wife, Richard," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "She is currently being held without bail at the county jail on attempted murder charges."

"She was framed!" Richard shouted, sweeping his arm wildly. "That video footage could easily have been altered! You're using this ridiculous personal drama to smear my family's name because you know I'm preparing to challenge your leadership at next month's shareholder meeting!"

A low murmur passed through the other board members. Evelyn had been discharged from the hospital three hours prior and was resting safely at home under heavy security, but the news of the party attack had already leaked to the press. Reed Enterprises stock was fluctuating wildly.

Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table and locking eyes with the CFO.

"Let's drop the theatrical act, Richard," Julian said softly. "You don't care about Chloe. If you did, you would have hired her a competent criminal attorney instead of spending the last six hours trying to transfer twenty million dollars out of the company’s offshore reserve accounts."

The room went dead silent.

Richard’s face instantly changed from outraged anger to a pale, ghostly white. His hands, which had been resting on his leather folder, began to tremble subtly.

"W-what are you talking about?" Richard stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating. "That... those transfers were authorized capital reallocations for the new resort project!"

Julian picked up a thick white binder sitting beside him and tossed it into the center of the table. It slid across the polished wood, coming to a stop directly in front of the board members.

"Inside that binder," Julian announced, addressing the entire room, "are three years of forensic accounting records. Richard Vance has been using his daughter’s interior design firm as a shell company to launder stolen money from our residential developments."

The board members immediately scrambled to open the binder, flipping through pages of bank statements, forged signatures, and fraudulent invoices.

"He embezzled over thirty-four million dollars," Julian continued, his voice cutting through the panic like a surgeon's scalpel. "Chloe didn't push my wife because she was madly in love with me, Richard. She did it because Evelyn discovered the discrepancies in the villa’s construction budget two days ago and was planning to present them to the auditors this afternoon."

Gasps echoed through the boardroom. One of the senior board members, an elderly man named Arthur, looked up from the binder in absolute disgust.

"Is this true, Richard?" Arthur demanded. "You used your own daughter to cover up your financial crimes?"

Richard backed away from the table, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps. He looked around the room, realizing that every ally he thought he had bought had turned against him in a single second.

"Julian... listen to me," Richard pleaded, his voice cracking as he reached out a trembling hand. "We can work this out! I can return the funds! Don't involve the authorities! It will destroy the company's valuation!"

"It's too late, Richard," Julian said coldly.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom clicked open. Four plainclothes agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by two federal marshals, stepped into the room.

"Richard Vance?" the lead agent stated, pulling out a federal warrant. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and money laundering. You have the right to remain silent."

As the federal marshals pulled Richard’s arms behind his back and snapped the iron cuffs onto his wrists, the disgraced CFO glared at Julian with pure hatred.

"You think you've won, Reed?!" Richard spat, struggling against the guards' grip. "My family built half of this company! You won't last a month without me! Your wife is weak, and your company is going to crumble!"

Julian didn't even look up as they dragged Richard out into the hallway. He simply turned the page of his executive planner, took out his pen, and looked at the remaining board members.

"Now," Julian said calmly. "Let's discuss the immediate restructuring of our financial department."

By noon, the news had exploded across every major financial news outlet. The Vance family had been completely dismantled in less than twenty-four hours. Chloe was facing decades in state prison for attempted murder, while her father was looking at federal prison time for massive corporate fraud.

Julian left the office early, leaving his trusted vice president in charge of damage control. All he wanted was to be home.

When his SUV pulled up the winding driveway of the hilltop estate, the sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the white stone house. The pool area had been completely cleaned; the caution tape was gone, and the water sparkled calmly under the blue sky.

Julian walked through the front doors, setting his briefcase down in the foyer. The house was quiet, filled with the comforting scent of chicken soup and fresh lavender.

He walked upstairs to the master bedroom and pushed the door open gently.

Evelyn was sitting up in the massive king-sized bed, propped up against soft velvet pillows. She wore a comfortable white sweater, her hair tied in a loose braid over her shoulder. Leo was curled up beside her, fast asleep with his head resting gently against her hip.

Evelyn looked up as Julian entered. A soft, genuine smile touched her lips—the first real smile he had seen since the tragedy.

Julian walked over quietly, slipping off his shoes and sitting on the edge of the mattress. He reached out, gently caressing her cheek with the back of his hand.

"How are you feeling?" he asked softly.

"The doctor said the contractions have completely stopped," Evelyn whispered, taking his hand and pressing it against her stomach. "And Clara is kicking up a storm today. I think she knows her dad saved us."

Julian leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, closing his eyes as a wave of deep peace washed over his tired body. "I spoke to the police and the SEC today, Evie. It's completely over. The Vances will never touch this family again."

"I saw the news," Evelyn said, wrapping her arms around his neck. "You protected us, Julian. In the water, and in the boardroom."

"I will always protect you," Julian swore, kissing her softly on the lips. "Always."

Suddenly, a tiny bump pushed out against Julian’s palm—a strong, energetic kick from inside Evelyn’s belly.

Julian laughed quietly, tears of pure happiness pricking his eyes as he looked down at his wife and sleeping son. The storm that had threatened to tear their lives apart had failed. The dark waters had receded, leaving behind a family stronger, more united, and more deeply in love than ever before.
