Chapter 1 - The Plunge into DarknessThe golden light of the setting sun reflected off the crystal-clear waters of the infinity pool, casting shimmered ribbons across the marble terrace of the hilltop villa. Laughter, the clinking of expensive crystal glasses, and the soft strains of a jazz quartet filled the warm evening air. To any outsider, the thirty-fifth birthday party for Evelyn Reed was a picture-perfect showcase of elite wealth and suburban perfection.

Evelyn stood near the edge of the pool, cradling her seven-month pregnant belly with both hands. Her light blue maternity dress fluttered gently in the evening breeze. At thirty-two, she was radiant, her face glowing with the quiet joy of expecting her second child—a baby girl they had already decided to name Clara. Nearby, her six-year-old son, Leo, was giggling as he chased a colorful beach ball across the lawn.
"Mommy, look!" Leo called out, pointing toward a butterfly resting on a rose bush. "It's orange like a tiger!"
Evelyn smiled softly, her heart full. "I see it, sweetie. Don't run too fast near the water, okay?"
She took a slow breath, enjoying the rare moment of peace. But the peace was illusory.
Behind her, the sharp, deliberate sound of high heels against slate tiles approached. The laughter of the guests seemed to fade into a muffled hum as a shadow fell across Evelyn's shoulders.
"Enjoying the view, Evelyn?" a voice purred. It was smooth, honeyed, and dripping with concealed venom.
Evelyn turned her head slightly to see Chloe Vance standing a mere two feet away. Chloe was twenty-six, impeccably styled in a tight designer dress, and employed as the lead interior designer for Reed Enterprises—the multi-million-dollar real estate firm owned by Evelyn’s husband, Julian Reed. For months, Evelyn had felt an unsettling tension whenever Chloe was around, a subtle undercurrent of disrespect that Julian had always brushed off as "harmless ambition."
"It's a beautiful evening, Chloe," Evelyn said politely, keeping her tone guarded. "Thank you for helping organize the venue decor."
Chloe stepped closer, her eyes scanning Evelyn's rounded stomach with an expression that bordered on pure disgust. "It’s a shame, really," Chloe whispered, leaning in so only Evelyn could hear. "A woman like you, clinging to a man like Julian just because you managed to trap him twice. Look at you. You’re stretched thin, tired, and completely oblivious."
Evelyn’s smile vanished. "Excuse me?"
"Julian doesn't love you anymore, Evelyn," Chloe sneered, her eyes glittering with cruel delight. "He stays out of pity. He spends his late nights with me in penthouses you’ve never even seen. This villa? He promised it to me for my birthday next month. You’re just occupying space in a life that no longer belongs to you."
Evelyn felt a sharp pang in her chest, but she straightened her posture, refusing to break. "If Julian has something to say to me, he will say it himself. You are a guest in my home, Chloe. I suggest you walk away before I have security escort you out."
Chloe’s face contorted into a mask of sudden, violent rage. "You arrogant bitch," she hissed. "You think you’ve won?"
Before Evelyn could react, before she could even raise her arms to shield herself, Chloe stepped forward and slammed both palms directly into Evelyn’s chest with savage force.
The party turned into a nightmare in a matter of seconds.
Evelyn lost her balance completely. Her heels slipped against the wet marble border of the pool. Time seemed to slow down into horrifying fragments. She felt her body tipping backward over open air. Instinctively, her hands wrapped tightly around her swollen belly, shielding her unborn baby with every ounce of motherly instinct she possessed.
SPLASH!
The heavy impact of the water echoed like a gunshot across the quiet garden.
Cold, suffocating water engulfed Evelyn instantly. The heavy fabric of her maternity dress pulled her downward into the ten-foot deep end. Panic flared in her chest. She kicked frantically, trying to swim to the surface, but a sharp, agonizing cramp shot through her abdomen. Darkness began to cloud the edges of her vision as water filled her mouth.
On the terrace above, chaos erupted.
"Mommy!" Leo screamed, his child's voice piercing through the ambient noise of the party. He ran to the edge of the pool, his small hands clutching the cold tile, tears streaming down his face. "Mommy! Help! Somebody help my mommy!"
Chloe immediately took three quick steps backward, clutching her throat and putting on a performative look of horror. "Oh my god!" she shrieked loudly, ensuring the nearby guests heard her. "She slipped! She fell in! Someone help her, she can't swim!"
Guests gasped, surging toward the edge, but no one moved to jump. The water churned violently as Evelyn sank lower, her strength rapidly failing.
Then another voice echoed across the garden—a roar of pure, unadulterated primal fury.
"EVELYN!"
Julian Reed pushed through the crowd near the villa doors, dropping his jacket, his phone, and a bottle of expensive champagne onto the marble floor. He didn't slow down. He didn't hesitate.
Taking three massive strides, Julian dove headfirst into the pool.
The water erupted as his powerful strokes propelled him straight toward the bottom. Down in the murky blue depths, he saw his wife's limp body, her long dark hair floating around her pale face like a halo. Her eyes were closed. She wasn't moving.
Julian wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her tightly against his chest, and kicked off the bottom with all his strength.
He broke the surface, gasping for air, holding Evelyn’s head above water. "I've got you! Evie, I've got you!"
Hands reached down from the pool deck. Guests helped pull Evelyn's unconscious body onto the dry stone floor, followed immediately by Julian, who dragged himself out, soaked and trembling.
"Mommy!" Leo sobbed, throwing himself beside her.
Julian dropped to his knees beside his wife. His face was white as sheet, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "Evie! Wake up! Please, baby, wake up!" He quickly checked her pulse, then cleared the water from her airway, placing his mouth over hers to give rescue breaths.
After three agonizing cycles, Evelyn suddenly coughed violently, spitting out pool water, her chest heaving as she gasped for air. Her eyes opened weakly, filled with confusion and sheer terror.
"The... the baby..." she whimpered, her hand clutching her stomach in agony.
"The baby is going to be okay, I’m right here," Julian choked out, pulling her head onto his lap, tears mixing with the pool water on his face. He looked up at his personal assistant standing in the crowd. "CALL AN AMBULANCE! NOW!"
While the crowd panicked and guests murmured in shock, Chloe stepped forward, smoothing her dress. She forced tears into her eyes and took a timid step toward Julian, her voice soft and trembling.
"Julian, oh thank god she's breathing!" Chloe gasped, reaching out a hand toward his shoulder. "It was awful... she was walking so close to the edge, and I tried to grab her hand, but she lost her footing and slipped! I tried to save her, Julian, I swear!"
Julian didn't look up immediately. He gently brushed a wet strand of hair away from Evelyn's pale forehead, making sure his wife was breathing steadily as sirens began to wail in the distance.
Slowly, agonizingly, Julian stood up.
He towered over Chloe. His dark eyes, usually calm and calculating in the boardroom, were now completely devoid of warmth. They were dark, dangerous, and dripping with an icy, lethal intensity that made Chloe's breath catch in her throat. He looked at her not as a colleague, not as a friend, but as something vile.
"Julian...?" Chloe stammered, stepping back slightly, her fake tears drying instantly under his piercing glare. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Julian took a single step toward her. The entire garden fell dead silent.
"You pushed her," Julian said. His voice wasn't loud. It wasn't a scream. It was a low, terrifying rumble that carried across the entire terrace like a death sentence.
"No! I didn't!" Chloe lied frantically, her voice rising in pitch. "I would never! Ask anyone, she tripped!"
Julian leaned down slightly, his face inches from hers. The cold fury radiating from him made her knees tremble.
"I saw you from the balcony, Chloe," Julian whispered, every syllable laced with razor-sharp absolute certainty. "I saw your hands on my wife."
Chloe’s face drained of all color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
Julian looked past her at the grand, white-pillared villa that Chloe had coveted for months. Then he looked back at her frozen, terrified face.
