Chapter 2 - The Mask SlipsThe blaring sirens of the ambulance cut through the heavy silence of the estate as paramedics rushed through the iron gates with a stretcher. Julian never left Evelyn’s side. He lifted her onto the gurney himself, holding her cold, wet hand tightly while the medical team attached monitors to check the baby’s heart rate.

"Her vitals are stabilizing, sir, but we need to transport her to Saint Jude’s Medical Center immediately to check for placental abruption," the lead paramedic announced calmly.

"I'm coming with you," Julian said without a second thought. He turned to his mother, who had just arrived at the party and was holding a sobbing Leo in her arms. "Mom, take Leo home. Stay with him until I call."

"Go, son," his mother said, her eyes fierce with emotion. "Protect your wife."

Before stepping into the back of the ambulance, Julian turned his head back toward the terrace. Chloe was still standing near the pool, surrounded by whispering guests who were now backing away from her as if she carried a contagious plague. She looked smaller, her arrogant composure completely shattered by Julian’s parting threat.

"Mark," Julian called out to his head of security, a broad-shouldered retired federal agent standing by the gate.

"Yes, Mr. Reed?"

"Lock down the property," Julian ordered, his voice flat and hard. "Nobody leaves until the police arrive and review the security footage from the pool cameras. And make sure Miss Vance does not step foot inside my house."

"Understood, sir."

The ambulance doors slammed shut, and the vehicle sped away into the night, lights flashing red against the dark trees.

Inside the back of the emergency vehicle, the dim interior was filled with the rhythmic beeping of the fetal heart monitor. Evelyn lay pale against the white sheets, an oxygen mask covering her nose and mouth. Tears leaked from the corners of her eyes as she stared up at her husband.

Julian knelt on the floor beside the stretcher, holding both of her hands in his. His suit was still dripping wet, chilling him to the bone, but he didn't care.

"Julian..." Evelyn’s voice was weak beneath the mask. "Chloe... she said..."

"Shh," Julian interrupted gently, pressing a kiss to her trembling knuckles. "Don't speak, Evie. Save your strength. Clara is okay. Do you hear that sound? That's her heart beating. She’s fighting."

Evelyn closed her eyes, listening to the rapid, steady thump-thump-thump of her unborn daughter's heartbeat. Relief washed over her, but the emotional wound remained raw and bleeding.

"She told me you didn't love me anymore," Evelyn whispered, tears soaking into her oxygen strap. "She said you were giving her the villa. She said... you spent your nights with her."

Julian felt as though a blade had been plunged into his gut. He looked into his wife's broken, vulnerable eyes and realized the depth of the poison Chloe had been pouring into her ear.

"Evelyn, look at me," Julian commanded softly, his voice shaking with intense emotion. "Look at me, please."

Evelyn opened her eyes.

"Every word that came out of that woman's mouth was a lie," Julian declared, his eyes burning with absolute sincerity. "I have never touched her. I have never loved anyone but you. She is an employee—an ambitious, sick woman who mistook my professional courtesy for something else. I was preparing to fire her next week because I discovered she was stealing funds from the residential development project."

He squeezed her hand tighter, leaning closer. "You and Leo and Clara are my entire life. Do you understand me? I would burn that villa to the ground before I ever let another human being hurt you."

Evelyn let out a long, shuddering breath, the icy knot of doubt in her stomach finally beginning to thaw. She squeezed his hand back, trusting the man she had built her life with for over ten years.

An hour later, at Saint Jude’s Hospital, the medical team completed a comprehensive ultrasound. The emergency room doctor, a stern woman with silver hair, smiled gently down at Evelyn as she wiped the warm gel from her abdomen.

"You were very lucky, Mrs. Reed," Dr. Evans said. "The cold water caused mild shock, and the fall triggered some early contractions, but the baby’s sac remained intact. There is no internal bleeding. We are going to keep you overnight for observation and give you medication to relax your uterus, but both you and your baby girl are going to survive this."

Julian collapsed into the chair beside the bed, burying his face in his hands as a long sob escaped his chest. The immense pressure that had been crushing his lungs since Evelyn hit the water finally snapped.

Evelyn reached out, running her fingers through his wet, messy hair. "Julian... it's okay. We're okay."

He raised his head, wiping his eyes, his demeanor shifting from relieved husband back to a merciless protector.

"You are going to rest here," Julian said, his tone turning quiet and decisive. "Mark is standing guard outside your door. Nobody enters this room without my permission."

"Where are you going?" Evelyn asked, worry creeping into her voice.

"I have to go back to the estate," Julian said, standing up and pulling his damp jacket back on. "The police are waiting for my statement. And Miss Vance needs to be removed from my life—permanently."

Meanwhile, back at the Reed estate, Chloe Vance was frantically pacing the floor of the guest guesthouse near the entrance. She had locked the door, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Her mind was racing. He saw me. He said he saw me from the balcony.

"No, no, no," she muttered to herself, chewing on a manicured fingernail. "The angle from the balcony was obstructed by the willow trees. He's bluffing. He didn't see anything. He's just trying to scare me."

She snatched her designer handbag off the bed and pulled out her phone, dialing Julian’s private number. It went straight to voicemail.

"Julian, please!" she cried into the receiver, her voice high and desperate. "You're confused! I know you're stressed about Evelyn, but you can't blame me for an accident! We need to talk! Call me back!"

She slammed the phone down onto the nightstand, her breath ragged. She looked around the luxurious room—the Italian marble floors, the custom silk drapes, the view of the valley below. She had spent two years angling for a place in Julian Reed’s life. She had tolerated his polite indifference, convincing herself that once Evelyn was out of the picture, he would see her worth.

She had pushed Evelyn not just out of anger, but out of a desperate, twisted belief that if the baby was gone, Evelyn’s hold on Julian would shatter.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the guesthouse clicked.

Chloe froze.

The door swung open, revealing Julian Reed standing in the threshold. He had changed into a dry black shirt and trousers, his hair still slightly damp. Behind him stood two uniform police officers and Mark, his head of security.

Chloe swallowed hard, forcing her fake, victimized smile back onto her face.

"Julian!" she cried, stepping forward. "Thank god you're back! The security guards wouldn't let me leave! They’re treating me like a criminal!"

Julian didn't step into the room. He remained standing in the doorway, his hands in his pockets, looking at her with a terrifyingly cold expression.

"You are a criminal, Chloe," Julian said softly.

"I didn't do it!" she shouted, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "I swear on my life, I didn't push her! You didn't see anything from that balcony!"

Julian slowly pulled a black high-definition flash drive out of his pocket and held it up between two fingers.

"You're right about one thing, Chloe," Julian said quietly. "The view from the second-floor balcony was partially blocked by the willow tree."

Chloe blinked, a flicker of hope rising in her chest. "See? I told you!"

"However," Julian continued, his voice dropping into a pitiless register, "what you didn't know is that three days ago, I installed a new 4K panoramic security system around the pool area to monitor Leo while he plays. The camera is hidden inside the decorative stone lantern right behind where you were standing."

Chloe’s blood went entirely cold. The room seemed to tilt beneath her feet.

"I’ve already reviewed the video with the officers," Julian said, gesturing to the policemen beside him. "It captured everything. The argument. The insult. And the precise moment your hands made contact with my pregnant wife's chest."

"No..." Chloe whispered, her knees buckling. She grabbed the edge of the desk to keep from falling. "Julian, please... I did it for us! She doesn't appreciate you! She's holding you back!"

"Officer," Julian said, turning his back on her entirely. "Take her away."

The two officers stepped into the room, pulling pair of steel handcuffs from their belts. "Chloe Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder and aggravated assault of a pregnant woman."

"Julian! Look at me!" Chloe shrieked as the cold steel snapped around her wrists. She kicked and screamed as they dragged her out toward the police cruiser. "Julian! You can't do this to me! I love you! JULIAN!"

Julian walked out onto the driveway, never turning around once to look at the screaming woman. He watched the police car drive down the winding road, its red lights fading into the dark night.

He turned to Mark. "Have her belongings packed into trash bags and thrown onto the curb outside the office tomorrow morning. Terminate her contract immediately."

"Right away, sir."

Julian took a deep breath of the cool night air, looking up at the grand villa illuminated by soft garden lights. He thought of his wife resting in the hospital bed, holding their daughter safe inside her.

The first battle was over. But as Julian pulled out his phone and saw an urgent message from his corporate board of directors, he realized that Chloe Vance was only the front soldier in a much larger, deadlier war that was about to hit his family.
