Chapter 4 - The Audit of a FraudThe document in my hand gleamed under the chandeliers—a certified forensic audit detailing every offshore wire transfer, every hidden shell company, and every falsified asset declaration executed by Vale Logistics over the past eight years.

Dominic stared at the paper, his eyes dilating in sheer terror. He lunged forward, his hand clawing for the document with the desperation of a drowning man reaching for a razor blade.
"Give me that!" Dominic roared, his voice cracking. "You stole those files! That’s corporate espionage! Security, arrest her!"
He didn't get within three feet of me.
Miller stepped into his path with the unstoppable force of a sliding vault door, catching Dominic by the forearm and applying just enough pressure to bring the corporate CEO to a sudden, stumbling halt. Dominic winced, his face twisting in pain as he struggled against a grip he couldn't break.
"Do not touch her, Mr. Vale," Miller said quietly, his voice devoid of all human warmth.
The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding storm. Half a dozen society photographers who had spent the evening taking flattering pictures of Chicago's elite were now frantically capturing the exact moment Dominic Vale—the untouchable golden boy of midwestern shipping—was physically restrained by another man’s security detail while his wife exposed him to the world.
Vanessa Quinn pushed her way through the paralyzed crowd, her face painted with sheer, unadulterated panic. "Dominic, stop it! You’re making a scene! Just tell everyone she’s crazy—"
"Quiet, Vanessa," I said, turning my gaze to her with a cold, devastating clarity. "Or your name right here on page twelve—detailing the luxury Michigan Avenue penthouse funded by corporate embezzlement under the entity VQ Holdings—goes straight to the federal prosecutor before midnight."
Vanessa’s jaw dropped. She stumbled backward, tripping over the hem of her emerald gown and colliding hard against a waiter carrying a tray of champagne flutes, sending glass and crystal shattering across the floor.
I turned back to Dominic, who was now pale, shaking, and utterly defeated in the grip of Miller’s hand.
"You told me this life requires a certain kind of woman, Dominic," I said, my voice carrying clearly to every corner of the silent ballroom. "You were right. It requires someone strong enough to build an empire, and smart enough to tear it down when the foundation is rotten."
I looked past him toward the raised dais where Arthur Vance, the managing director of Vale Logistics’ board of directors, stood paralyzed with shock.
"Arthur," I called out, my voice ringing clear and authoritative. "As the legal holder of fifty-one percent voting shares—transferred legally and irrevocably to my name this afternoon under my maiden name, Sterling—I am formally invoking emergency shareholder clause 9-B."
Arthur blinked rapidly, his mouth opening and closing like a fish. "Ms... Ms. Sterling? What... what are you invoking?"
"I am dissolving the executive board of Vale Logistics effective immediately," I announced, letting the audit papers drop from my hand to flutter slowly onto the marble floor. "And I am transferring all assets, shipping fleets, and patent portfolios directly into the Mercer-Sterling conglomerate under Richard’s and my joint management."
A collective gasp swept through the room.
Dominic let out a broken, strangled sound, his knees finally buckling beneath him as Miller released his arm, leaving him to stagger and catch himself against the edge of a nearby dining table.
"No," Dominic whispered, staring blankly at the floor. "No... you can't do that. That’s mine. I built that."
May you like
"You built nothing, Dominic," I said softly, stepping past him without a backward glance. "You merely house-sat my father’s legacy until I came back to reclaim it."
I looped my arm through Richard Mercer’s, and together, we turned our backs on the wreckage, walking slowly and deliberately out of the ballroom while the elite of Chicago watched in stunned, breathless silence.
