Chapter 2 - The Service Entrance and the Shadow KingThe private service elevator of the Meridian Hotel descended into the subterranean loading bays with a smooth, silent hum.

While the front entrance of the hotel was currently blinded by the flashing bulbs of the Tribune and Sun-Times paparazzi, capturing Dominic and Vanessa stepping out of the matte-black Maybach, the loading dock smelled of cold concrete, exhaust fumes, and industrial bleach.

Waiting beside the reinforced steel door stood Miller, Richard Mercer’s chief of security—a man built like a granite pillar whose earpiece flashed a faint blue light in the shadows. He didn't blink as I stepped out of the elevator. He simply inclined his head with crisp, military precision.

"Good evening, Mrs. Vale—forgive me, Ms. Sterling," Miller said, his voice deep and controlled. "Mr. Mercer is waiting in the executive holding suite. He instructed me to ensure your entry is entirely uninterrupted."

"Thank you, Miller," I replied, my voice as steady as cold glass. "Is Dominic inside the main ballroom yet?"

"Mr. Vale and Ms. Quinn cleared the red carpet six minutes ago," Miller replied, a faint, humorless ghost of a smile touching the corner of his mouth. "They are currently accepting congratulations near the dais from the municipal transport board. They appear thoroughly convinced they are the center of the universe."

"Let’s remedy that misconception," I said.

We navigated a labyrinth of private corridors behind the grand ballroom, bypassing the panicked catering staff and frantic event planners. The muffled, thunderous roar of the orchestra and the murmur of three hundred elite guests grew louder with every step.

At the end of the passage stood Richard Mercer.

He wore a bespoke charcoal overcoat over a midnight suit, his silver hair neatly combed back, his pale gray eyes carrying the quiet, terrifying authority of a man who owned half the state legislature. When he saw me round the corner, a genuine, warm smile broke across his weathered face.

"Evelyn," Richard said, stepping forward and offering his arm. "Magnificent. Absolutely magnificent. Your father would be standing right beside you tonight, looking down with absolute pride."

I slid my hand into the crook of his arm, feeling the solid, unshakable strength beneath his sleeve. "Thank you, Richard. For the dress, for the invitation, and for giving me back the keys to my own life."

"I merely opened the door," Richard murmured, turning us toward the massive mahogany double doors that led directly into the heart of the Meridian ballroom. "You are the one walking through it. Are you ready to watch an empire crack?"

I looked up at the heavy brass handles, feeling the cold metal beneath my fingertips.

"I've been ready for eight years," I whispered.

Richard raised his hand, signaling the sound engineer stationed at the side entrance. The heavy oak doors swung wide open, flooding the dark corridor with blinding light, deafening music, and the collective gasp of three hundred powerful people.
