Chapter 5 - The Hidden TruthThe smoke from the gunfire drifted slowly through the vaulted corridors, smelling of cordite and burning dust.

Julian stepped over the fallen mercenaries, his pistol still raised, signaling his guards to secure the lower perimeter while he doubled back toward the third-floor staff wing. His instincts screamed that the attack on the loading dock was a diversion—a noisy, violent distraction designed to pull his security detail away from the north corridor while a stealth team infiltrated from the cliffside terrace.
As he reached the heavy oak door of Clara’s suite, he noticed something wrong immediately.
The smart-lock panel had been cleanly bypassed with a fiber-optic laser cutter. The door hung slightly ajar.
"Clara?" Julian called out quietly, pushing the door open with the barrel of his gun.
The room was empty.
The twin bed was disheveled, the photo album lay face-down on the floor, and the window overlooking the jagged Lake Michigan cliffs had been smashed outward from the outside, ropes dangling in the cold night wind.
They hadn't just breached the house; they had snatched them right out from under his nose.
Julian cursed, a dark, vicious sound in Italian, and strode over to the window, sweeping the floor with his flashlight. Near the broken glass lay a small, silver cufflink stamped with a familiar family crest—the crossed serpents of the Detroit syndicate.
Viktor hadn't come to kill Julian tonight. He had come to finish what was started four years ago.
Before Julian could punch the encrypted comms to order a full estate lockdown and pursuit across the lake roads, his private secure terminal on the desk beeped softly—a direct, encrypted data packet routing through a secure satellite proxy.
Julian strode back across the room, holstering his weapon, and tapped the screen.
A video file opened automatically.
The screen flickered to life, showing a dimly lit subterranean warehouse—likely one of Viktor’s abandoned shipping yards near the Chicago riverfront. Clara Bennett was tied to a metal chair, looking bruised and terrified, while little Rosie was crying softly in the arms of a masked guard standing in the background.
Then, stepping out of the shadows into the harsh overhead light, a man appeared.
He wore an expensive charcoal overcoat, his silver-streaked hair slicked back, a thin, cruel smile playing across his lips.
Viktor Vance.
"Hello, cousin," Viktor’s voice purred smoothly through the audio speakers. "I trust my little welcome party downstairs kept you sufficiently occupied while my extraction team did their work."
Julian’s fingers curled into tight fists, his nails digging into his palms until the skin whitened. "Let them go, Viktor. This is between you and me."
"Is it?" Viktor laughed softly, stepping closer to Clara, reaching out to tilt her chin up roughly. "You always were arrogant, Julian. You thought you won four years ago when you burned the Hamptons estate and buried an empty box. You thought Elena was dead."
Julian’s breath hitched violently. The room seemed to tilt on its axis.
"What did you say?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, suppressed fury.
"I said your beloved wife didn't burn to death, cousin," Viktor smiled, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. "She survived the crash. But she suffered severe memory loss from the blast. And when my men found her wandering near the docks, I realized something wonderful: why kill the golden goose when you can keep her locked away in a private clinic in Geneva, nursing a child who belongs to the most dangerous man in America?"
Julian felt as though a physical blow had struck him in the chest.
"Elena... is alive?"
"Oh, she was," Viktor chuckled darkly. "Until about six months ago, when she managed to smuggle a message out to a loyal friend—Clara here. Clara brought her daughter back to the United States to find you, hoping against hope that the great Julian Vance could protect what was left of his family."
Viktor leaned directly into the camera lens, his smile vanishing, replaced by a mask of pure venom.

The screen went black.
