Chapter 4 - The War in the ShadowsBefore I could digest the crushing weight of Adrian’s confession, the penthouse security alarm began to chime—a low, rhythmic, high-pitched warble that turned the glass walls crimson.

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.

Marcus Vance rushed into the living room, holding a tactical submachine gun, his expression grim.

"Boss! We have a breach!" Marcus reported rapidly. "Falco’s enforcer squad bypassed the subterranean security gates using a stolen maintenance pass! They are in the private elevator shaft coming up right now!"

Adrian’s entire aura shifted in a single heartbeat. The grieving, regretful man vanished instantly, replaced by the terrifying, apex predator of the New York underworld.

He pulled a heavy, custom Sig Sauer pistol from his shoulder holster, racking the slide with a sharp CLICK.

He turned to me, his storm-gray eyes burning with absolute, protective fury.

"Marcus," Adrian commanded flatly. "Take Claire and Noah into the panic room behind the library. Lock the steel doors. If anyone touches those doors who isn't wearing my coat, detonate the secondary charge."

"Adrian...!" I gasped, my heart slamming against my ribs in pure, instinctual terror—not for myself, but for him.

Adrian stepped up to me, placing his hand behind my neck, pulling my forehead against his. He looked into my eyes with an intensity that burned right through my soul.

"I spent six years losing you, Claire," Adrian whispered, his deep voice thick with absolute devotion. "I am not letting anyone take you or my son tonight."

He turned to Noah, dropping to one knee, looking the five-year-old boy straight in the eye.

"Noah," Adrian said softly. "I need you to take your mom into that safe room and guard her. Can you do that for me, soldier?"

Noah looked at Adrian, then at the heavy gun in his hand, and finally at my terrified face. The little boy nodded firmly, his small shoulders squaring.

"I'll keep her safe," Noah promised.

A fierce, breathtaking smile lit up Adrian’s severe face. He pressed a quick, firm kiss against Noah’s forehead, stood up, and turned toward the elevator doors as the heavy steel plates of the panic room slid shut behind us.
